(Kitchen) Island Light
Recently my friend Marci visited me in Atlanta. Marci bought and is renovating Grey Gardens' twin sister house, complete with raccoons, open food jars, and an owner who had buried a lot of gold coins in the backyard, which is a really funny tale for another day. She needed a ton of light fixtures, so we hit my go-to spot for such occasions, Circa Lighting. Anyway, my point is, picking out the fixtures for a kitchen island are much more complicated than I ever could have imagined. You want to be able to have a clear view underneath it to one room when you are standing in the other room. This involved a lot of math involving ceiling heights and fixture heights and her height; I felt like I was taking the SAT again or something. I had no idea it could be so complicated.
Thus, I decided to turn to houzz to see how it's done. So many homes today feature kitchens that open to the rest of the house, with the spaces divided by an island. The lighting you choose here can really make the room. It's a chance to do something different than the rest of the lighting in the rooms. It's a spot where the light fixtures will really stand out, and the right choice can add so much personality and style to your home.

These traditional lights have a strong presence, but the clear glass allows the view to continue through and past them.
These softer shades work well with the softer touches in the room, like the fabric window treatments.

These fixtures have a party lantern look.
This fixture is a show stopper! So elegant and contemporary.
These outdoor lantern style fixtures work so well with the other warm cabin elements, like the rough hewn posts.
Why not add a glamorous chandelier to an island?
You really cannot go wrong with a line of matching pendants. Here these add a crucial pop of color to the kitchen.
Sleek Scandanavian sculptural pendants are perfect in this modern kitchen.
I can't seem to write about kitchens or islands without including this interesting image. Everything about it is so unexpected to me, and the perfectly curated light fixtures are no exception.
