Favorite Halloween Candy?
Comments (9)My daughter, now 20, told me last year that she just realized she likes Almond Joy -- she always thought she hated them, because they went straight to me from the trick or treat bag. She didn't realize that we were just following the tradition of each parent having "first grabs" rights for one personal favorite. Definitely the least popular "treat" in my childhood neighborhood was the "Greatest Story Ever Told" pamphlet one family gave out instead of candy. One year they taped on some root beer flavored hard candies, but even they weren't very good. I loved Chunky and of course Almond Joy best. We used to live on a street so popular for trick or treating that we went through at least 15 big bags of candy each night. When we moved just three blocks to a different street, we get so few kids -- maybe 3-6, tops -- that I can be the nice lady who gives out big Hershey bars....See MoreHalloween Candy Alternatives?
Comments (23)I've enjoyed your stories and suggestions. Rhizo, I agree with you -- it's like a plague of locusts hitting us -- with the SUV's lined up out front coming from who knows where! Sometimes the "kids" look old enough to vote! My regret is that there isn't a good prediction of necessary quantity. Some years we have a hundred or more and run out; other years we get so few that we're left with a bunch of candy that I don't want! Here's a story though that makes opening that door to the little ones worthwhile: One Halloweed the doorbell rang; I opened the door to a little one (about 2 years or so) who said nothing -- just stood and stared at me. His dad was standing back in the shadows, otherwise the little boy was all alone. I said, "Is it trick or treat? Is that why you're standing on my porch looking like that?" The little boy said nothing, but the father stepped forward with a smile and said "sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." I gave the little boy some candy and the father started asking about my decorations and how I made them. As we were talking, I could tell the little boy was anxious to get on to more trick or treating. Finally he stepped forward and waved his hand in a sort of solute and said, "Well, Merry Christmas!" and turned and marched on. I said "and Merry Christmas to you too!" His dad rolled his eyes as if to say "like I said, sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." When I closed the door, my husband said "did I hear you wish someone a Merry Christmas", as if I had completely lost my senses! We laugh about that sweet little boy and re-tell the story often....See MoreRats, I found the Halloween Candy
Comments (23)For you Peeps peeps, one of the things that the Washington Post has done for several years now is a Peeps diorama contest. Very funny (tho some people had too much time on their hands). Last year's winner was "Rest in Peeps," mourning the loss of Twinkies after Hostess declared bankruptcy and sold (but Hostess products are back, so maybe the creators of that diorama will have a "Living Dead" piece now!). Winners' diorama photos will be up on the Post website April 20 (if you do a Google search now, you can see past winners)....See MoreI've made a Halloween candy spider web!
Comments (26)Moms in my condo complex organized a Trick or Trunk outing for the kids. Sorry I didn't take photos. We are not a big complex, 60 units in 2 buildings and we had about 10 or 15 trunks decorated and 20-30 kids if that many. One large bag of candy was all I needed. I had tons of kids books from board books to middle school level, several stuffed animals and boxes of crayons/markers. I set my SUV trunk up as a library with a small children's lamp, display of books, stuffed animals etc. I also had a very large round tub on the ground for toddlers full of books. It was a hit, every kid took a least one book and several children came back not for more candy but another book. In addition, every child got Dial-A-Teacher stickers and math and English crib sheets to help with homework . I spent a lot of time explaining to parents that DAT is free and available M-Th 4-7 for free help with homework to anyone pre-k-college. I was so happy that it was a hit. An added bonus, the stuffed animals found great homes and I got rid of lots of items from my apartment I no longer need or want. To explain why I have so many children's items, I am active in supporting several low income day care centers/Head Starts and am the receiver of tons of toys, books etc to share with the centers. Currently, the centers are either closed or not taking any donations due to Covid and I only have a small 2 bedroom apartment with little closet space. ETA-College not collage. UGH! I type too fast and my proof-reading skills leave a lot to be desired....See Morebob_cville
