Rats, I found the Halloween Candy

now, of course, I have to eat it... and I have a good head start on it.

No Halloween candy here, but I love Cadbury mini Easter eggs and they are out in the stores NOW!!! LOL!

I used to have so much trouble with the Halloween candy, sometimes had to buy and then buy again. But health issues prevent me from doing that anymore. I love those Cadbury eggs, actually just about any candy but licorice.

I've enjoyed your stories and suggestions. Rhizo, I agree with you -- it's like a plague of locusts hitting us -- with the SUV's lined up out front coming from who knows where! Sometimes the "kids" look old enough to vote! My regret is that there isn't a good prediction of necessary quantity. Some years we have a hundred or more and run out; other years we get so few that we're left with a bunch of candy that I don't want! Here's a story though that makes opening that door to the little ones worthwhile: One Halloweed the doorbell rang; I opened the door to a little one (about 2 years or so) who said nothing -- just stood and stared at me. His dad was standing back in the shadows, otherwise the little boy was all alone. I said, "Is it trick or treat? Is that why you're standing on my porch looking like that?" The little boy said nothing, but the father stepped forward with a smile and said "sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." I gave the little boy some candy and the father started asking about my decorations and how I made them. As we were talking, I could tell the little boy was anxious to get on to more trick or treating. Finally he stepped forward and waved his hand in a sort of solute and said, "Well, Merry Christmas!" and turned and marched on. I said "and Merry Christmas to you too!" His dad rolled his eyes as if to say "like I said, sometimes he gets it and sometimes he doesn't." When I closed the door, my husband said "did I hear you wish someone a Merry Christmas", as if I had completely lost my senses! We laugh about that sweet little boy and re-tell the story often.

How do I get rid of rats between the ceiling and floor?

I too have a similar problem, but possibly a little more complicated. Rats can be heard knawing in the ceiling/floor between the first floor and basement. There is no obvious entry from outside, except for a dryer vent, which I covered with hardware cloth. The only visible sign of any activity occurred under a bathroom sink in the basement, where bags of bar soap were decimated. This cabinet is a good distance from where they can be heard, meaning they somehow have the run of the walls. I tried glue traps, and the ROUS proudly left a beautiful two footed print with tail, just to add fuel to the fire. It was definitely a Norway rat, huge, and unphased by my trap. I called two exterminators, one was a friend who said the drier vent was the only apparent access, the other said he couldn't do any thing that I couldn't do cheaper and offered no additional insight into possible entry points (didn't charge me either for 1.5 hours spent looking around). The friend put out some bait which lead me to believe we had won, when no more activity was heard for about six months or so, with a smell two weeks after, and finally, a swarm of flies, (no kidding) by the tens of thousands. I continue to feed them pb under the sink in spring traps that no matter how I arrange or set, they are always triggered and eaten. I now included additional poison under the sink, but it hasn't been touched, nor the spring traps since adding the poison station (I guess it is scarey and new). I still here them/it under my bed in the floor knawing most mornings, but I'm helpless to counterstrike. Except for perhaps unknown underground tunnels leading through the brick walls (not likely), neither I nor anyone else can find how access is gained. I was told that this type of rat wouldn't be able to gain access from the roof, hmmm? There would likely be other locations accessible throughout the house if this were the case, and there would be evidence. I have thought about loading a shotgun with squirrel or rabbit shot and firing off a few rounds into the ceiling from below when I here activity, but then the repair work would probably be as much as just tearing out the ceiling to investigate in the first place. I have never seen any evidence for rats, outside of the bathroom cabinet and constant knawing, but I am beyond aggregated and would appreciate any suggestions available. I'm leaning towards the earlier suggestion to just burn it down.

We normally average about 100 kids. I did up 50 baggies of candy this year (I was going to do 100, but decided to do 50 and give the kids who did show 2x as much as I was planning). We handed out 44 bags. We put a fence up about 2 feet from our step making it an easy 8 feet from my front door. The kids would yell "Happy Halloween" and we would get up, santize our hands (my front door is all glass so they can see us do this), then put on a mask, go outside and hand them their candy. Not one parent complained about us not using tongs (if you have covid and don't clean your hands you put the virus on the tongs which puts it on the bags so it defeats the purpose IMO) and putting them in their childs buckets and bags. They were all just grateful that we handed out anything as more than half the houses on my block were closed for the evening. :( My son took his son out in their area and he pretty much hit the jackpot. While I gave him a box full of Nestle full size bars (his favourites are all in one box), a lot of the people in their area also handed out full size bars and one house gave him a family size bag of Cadbury Buttons chocolate. His mom was the most excited about the full size Fun Dips. hahahaha We have a little candy left over, which I'll give to my grandson as well.

Moni, I do. I had way too much for our first Halloween in this house. And at the other end of the scale, after talking to former neighbors, I would have run out if I'd still been there. They had a bumper crop of trick or treaters and we had just a disappointing few, DH found it a real let down, he loves Halloween and the children at the door.

Big Costco boxes of candy bars. And I think the use by date is coming up so I don't know that it will be here much longer. It hasn't been a problem for me, sweets only occasionally tempt me - but try to drag me away from a platter of French fries, or nachos, something high fat and salty and its a different story ;)

I love all those candies and honestly, I'm not even particular but since I found our about high blood blucose, I am afraid to eat them.

I love the Butterfinger Eggs..I HAD Butterfinger hearts in my desk drawer at work...Had being the key word..but yesterday I bought 2 bite Mounds because I knew the hearts would not make it past end of shift. Lol...

I was waiting for Walgrens to put the candy on special..then I'll grab a few bags of the "eggs".

Oh, Zipper and Terri, I got just what you like... mini butterfingers :)

I shall take them with me tomorrow, and pass them out to other cyclists... before we head out.

I need them out of the house, now that I know again where they are. LOL

Moni, I had to laugh when I saw the title of your post. Sounds like something I'd do. If you google "recipes using butterfinger candy bars, you'll find some yummy cake/cookie recipes. Or else, just watch a good movie and eat your heart out (literally). I know you wouldn't do that so have at it today!

Mor, I am just like you as far as cravings go. I could care less about sweet things but a family size bag of Doritoes will not survive 24 hours in my house. And Robert doesn't get any.

yep. Halloween candy still leftover here... I only buy candy that I will eat, but I very rarely want candy. I also prefer salty snacks!

no halloween candy left but i did find a choclate bar on top my fridge that i forgot i put there. the stores are bright and beautiful now with the easter candies. just those beautiful easter colors brightens up a day. love peeps and peanut butter eggs.

I asked my dear hubby to get candy I don't like. No go. So we get to eat it when we have no trick or treaters. Way too much left over! I heard a thing on the radio a few years back about peeps. They were talking about microwaving them. Funny as all get out, they swell up! And they taste like lightly toasted marshmallows after you "nuke" them. Too funny and too tasty.

I read the title as "Rats found the Halloween Candy", and was picturing a hole in the back of the closet, a mess of chewed up wrappers, and a scattering of droppings.

As a kid I would regularly have Halloween candy that would last until Easter. My wife said she usually finish all her candy in the next few days after Halloween. These days when we have our giant annual Halloween party, the leftover candy usually doesn't last any longer than the leftover food from the party, (unless I hide some.)

For you Peeps peeps, one of the things that the Washington Post has done for several years now is a Peeps diorama contest. Very funny (tho some people had too much time on their hands). Last year's winner was "Rest in Peeps," mourning the loss of Twinkies after Hostess declared bankruptcy and sold (but Hostess products are back, so maybe the creators of that diorama will have a "Living Dead" piece now!).

Winners' diorama photos will be up on the Post website April 20 (if you do a Google search now, you can see past winners).

I'll have to try microwaving the peeps! I never knew that we could microwave them.

It may sound funny but I put 'peeps' in the freezer. I like them more chewy.
