Most cost efficient way to replace tub with a shower?

My newlywed DD and her DH just bought a new house. They would like to replace the fiberglass (acrylic?) tub/shower unit with a shower. They have a very large BR and room to expand so they are thinking of a shower in the 3.5 x 5 foot range. They are very tall and would like the walls at least 7 feet tall.

What is the most cost effective way to do this? They had looked at units at Lowes but after researching them they had horrendous reviews. A drain pan and tiling sounds expensive plus I worry about future leaks.

Give me your thoughts on how to do this. They have several projects that need to be done in this house that doesn't leave them with tons of $$ for want to be done projects.
