Flat screen TV over fireplace - ideas for making it look nice?
Comments (69)I needed to mount a TV above the fireplace because it was really the only place in the room it could be viewed by everyone and not in the way. The mantel of our fireplace is rather high (almost 6 feet) which would put the center of the TV well above a comfortable viewing angle. I spent months searching for a TV mount that could lower the TV to a decent height. I quickly discovered that anything motorized would cost several times what I paid for the TV. Beyond that, there were 2 options: Omnimount or Down and Out by Dynamic Mounting (http://www.dynamicmounting.com/index.php). The Omnimount is cheaper ($200-$300 vs. $400-$500) but an inferior product for my purposes. The Down and Out mount is much thinner (protrudes ~4 inches from the wall) and can lower the TV much farther (~30 inches!). I should also say that I have engineering degrees and tend to do all my own work. I thought about making my own mount but was a bit surprised at both the cost and level of difficulty. The Down and Out was fairly simple to mount on the wall and works VERY well....See MoreAny Seating Ideas for This Small Corner? Pix
Comments (18)Great ideas there, I love the wood Crafstman's style one especially. I do know a carpenter, don't know if he's quite capable of that kind of work, but, he might be. I actually have been scouring Ebay for some vintage tables like that one. Good ones, not so easy to come by. I saw one recently but the top was too badly chipped. I've been walking into local antique stores also and haven't seen any yet. I did see the perfect real wicker porch furniture but I was afraid the squirrels would eat it up just like they have been doing to my porch :P I can't really close up the area because of where the cabinets are let alone, when I renovated it had been sort of closed off, and I opened it up at that time so that I'd be able to have more counter space and more cabinetry. There was sort of a separation between that area as it used to be the old porch which got added to the house and I toyed with making it an arch - to match the arched doorway which leads to the hallway on the other side of the kitchen (not seen in these photos but, can be seen in another thread that I posted today about possible backsplash choices). BTW, I have a lot of Fiestaware, not vintage, although I do have a set of another vintage set similar to Fiesta - I forget the name of it off-hand. It's one of the reasons why I had some glass cabinets put into my kitchen; I have a lot of vases, shakers, small pitchers, etc. that I like to show off....See MoreHow We Really Live - TV and furniture arrangement
Comments (34)Thanks everyone! Sunnysmom - Thanks for the hint. I think the command hook idea would be the easiest. It’s the little things that go undone, or lead to fussing by husbands that don’t notice such things. always1 stepbehind - thank you for the compliment. I love your screen name; I can relate. I feel that I am on top of something, for once. becky and dhygarden- thanks for checking back. I ended up not going bold, except for pillows. My rug has such a “presence”. I will update again when the furniture is delivered. lindsey — haha you are right. I DID post pics of some samples. But none seemed right - they were all either too dark, too fancy, washed out, etc. I didn’t get any immediate responses so I went back to the store and got different samples. The kindly staff took an inordinate interest in my project and we found some fabrics that I think I’m going to be happy with. I really enjoyed the process. I decided to replace both wing chairs. I kinda feel bad about getting rid of them but I think the whole place will seem fresher....See MoreHow to avoid placing the TV above dinning table in this room? Help!!
Comments (31)I like the banquette ideas from DecoEnthusiaste, above. If you put comfortable banquette seating under the windows, put the TV on the wall perpendicular to the slider, and get an adjustable height table that can be switched from coffee table to dining height, it might work. But very expensive if you’re going to go custom. How many people in your family? Is there any way to make that room just a seating area/tv but build table height counter seating under the bar counter for eating? Here’s an example:...See MoreWest_Coaster
