Steam Shower with Wedi and Granite -need vapor barrier for steam?
Comments (3)Granite slabs? Granite tiles? My recollection is that wedi is not a vapor barrier. They might have changed their methods, but as of about 4 or 5 years ago, you needed to either use an epoxy sealant on the face of the board prior to tiling, or use an epoxy adhesive to attach the tile to the wedi and then an epoxy grout. Don't let the steam tube contact the wedi board. It can melt or deform the foam core. Slope the ceiling. And you probably know the ceiling needs the same treatment as the walls as far as the vapor barrier goes. But as davidro recommended, contact wedi or go on their website to see if they have steam shower construction details. Post back with any details. Best, Mongo...See MoreSteam shower vs regular shower
Comments (3)What roarah wrote. If it's a remodel, it needs to be built as a steam shower from the studs out. Sloped ceiling, insulation, vapor barrier. Preferable a porcelain tile, not a natural stone that can absorb moisture. All penetrations through the tile need to be vapor-proofed; Lights, plumbing, etc. Steam generator unit gets sized to not just the volume of the shower space, but to the materials used to build the shower as well....See MoreHow is a steam shower different from a regular shower?
Comments (4)Yes it functions very much like the spa or gym steam room. As roarah said there's a small steam generator that needs to be installed (usually inside nearby closet) where you have to run plumbing and electrical to. They have to run an electrical line from your electrical box to the seam generator so that can increase labor cost if your electrical panel is far from the bathroom. They have to run plumbing (usually) from sink area to steam generator and then run another pipe (which steam will run through) from generator to your shower. When we do steam showers, we usually install a bench in the shower so you can sit down and relax. You do want to have a decent size shower (has to be bigger than at least 3'x3'). Shower glass enclosure seals the shower area and usually we put a small window above shower door so when you aren't using the steam function....See MoreBathroom before (old steam shower) and after (walk-in shower)
