Light/lamp selection needed for media credenza in eclectic open plan.
So, it's the little stuff that that gets me befuddled in my mixy open plan.
I need some sort of light lamp on this media credenza. It can't be over
13 1/2" h. I do not want ceiling high hats/ recessed lighting. I do not want a floor lamp as there is one on the other side of the room. On occasion I would briefly move it to the edge to see inside to the cabinet electronics.
Art on the wall is not finalized so no need to critique yet. I am thinking I do not want to spend over $200.
What would look good here and be useful? The rooms have a mix of brass and a bit of bronze metal stuff. The kitchen has stainless but I don't see that here. I thought of something off white / stone-ish but came up empty. Also looked for natural fiber and came up empty. I looked at modern linear task type lighting but wasn't sure if that would work and most are to high. What to do?
It doesn't have to match but it has to go with open plan existing lighting.

Comments (25)General thoughts: I agree with the poster who commented that lights ought to blend into your overall design -- they should enhance your overall look rather than jumping out at you. I vote for "standout fixtures" in the places where they'll really show (probably the dining room table and the kitchen island) and moderate fixtures where other things will distract from them anyway (like bedrooms and hallways). I personally would match metals. Right now the trend is eclectic, but that won't always be true. I think matching is especially important in a small room -- like a bathroom -- but less important in a great room. If you want to go with something trendy -- like the birdcages or industrial-looking light fixtures that seem to be popping up everywhere -- they are something that can easily be changed out in the future. But if I were buying something trendy, I'd look for an inexpensive knock-off, knowing that it's going to look dated sooner rather than later. I wouldn't worry too much about lights in hallways, etc. -- those are small details that seem important at the moment, but really aren't going to be noticed in daily use. I absolutely want low, background lighting in a number of places: I want a rope light above the crown molding in my dining area ceiling. I want rope lighting under the edge of the bathroom vanity so we don't have to turn on lights in the middle of the night. And I like dimmer switches for the major light fixtures. This is a small thing, but it's a goal of mine: I'm trying to avoid specialty light bulbs. In my house right now -- in addition to plain light bulbs, of course -- I have big, fat bulbs over my breakfast table and bar, candle-looking light bulbs over my dining room table, small round bulbs in the overheads in my office, and "Hollywood" bulbs over my sink. The upshot is that I have to keep a variety of sizes of bulbs on hand! Admittedly, with the new, long-lasting bulbs, this isn't the headache that it was a few years ago, but I figure that if I choose better for our next house, I can have only ONE TYPE of bulb that'll work everywhere. Yes, I've already bought the dining room chandelier, and it has "upturned" globes that hold . . . standard bulbs! Another of my goals: Though every room needs an overhead light, I want to minimize the number. For example, I am putting a wall sconce at the top and bottom of the staircase instead of an overhead pendant that I can't reach -- even with a ladder. As people go higher and higher with ceilings, it's important to think about how you're going to change those light bulbs! My garage is now half full of tables, nightstands and desks, etc., most under $20, all needing some love before we head south. This will be interesting since I have been more into wood refinishing in the past, but Florida seems to cry out for clean bright light colors. When I see a redone yellow or coral or turquoise or robin's egg piece, I think they are wonderful. I'll have to get over being timid and shake off the painting-wood-is-sacrilige mentality. I have time to think and pick colors, as we won't move for a year or two. The garage shop is shut down anyways for a couple months until spring. Another thing you can think about is maybe a deeper color rug in the living room. Aside from the sheer practicality of it, a rich deep color rug gives such a sense of luxury. You can get this from a modern rug or a hand made Oriental rug in a woven type kilim or knotted Persian type rug. These days, you can get a quality hand knotted Persian rug for not much money at all. Here are some contemporary rugs with rich color. Actually my monitor may be not translating the color of for lovely living room furniture well. Are your sofas white or dove grey? Also, where will you be mounting your television? The picture that was too slim for over your sofa might be the right size to mount over your bar counter. Also, on the side of that arch where you have round mirrors, if you want to continue the blue aqua theme, there are wonderful round blue/aqua plates from different countries you can put up there. Do you have any friends or coworkers from Iran? If they go back on a visit, ask them to bring you back some decorative plates from Isfahan. They will just knock your socks off. Or a vase you can display on a pedestal that you mount on the wall. The pottery industry in Isfahan is ancient and very advanced and they specialize in the blue colors that you like. For now, though, focus on the living room to make it inviting and comfortable. decoenthusiaste has a really good idea for your layout. Try that route first. Later on, you can fill in the piano space with bookshelves, another chair or two, with the piano as a centerpiece. You asked about glass coffee tables that would allow you to showcase an interesting patterened rug. Look for something up on legs, but with a substantial frame or base that will balance out your current sofa. I imagine if you don't want recessed cans, you probably don't want track lighting either. Track lighting would be an easy and inexpensive way to do a wall wash. Here's an article about wall-washing.
You could also look at picture lights. While they are really designed to highlight artwork, they would also brighten up that side of the room. Here's a search on Lamps Plus for picture lighting.
You might also look at installing sconces, though it would require rearranging the artwork, I think.
Maybe uplighting, like this?

I LOVE THIS! I think a sculpture-y thing would look great on the credenza.
But, it's $$$$$
I like these but also can't afford. However, some might give off more of a nightlight glow so wouldn't work.
Kitch4me, I had found a lamp like those on Amazon and might get to tide me over till I find what I really want. Husband is also not liking the darkness over on that end in the evening.
I might hit up a 2nd hand accessory store nearby. When I couldn't find anything interesting for my fireplace mantel I got lucky there and all below budget.
