Resurfacing vs. replacing cabinets

We're doing some urgent kitchen repairs (replacing appliances) but also want to have a long-range plan because that will impact how we deal with the immediate work. At some point in the next two years, we want to change our cabinets--it would be great to reconfigure them slightly but we don't need to move any appliances. The base cabinets are functional but not beautiful, and we have an empty wall where we'd like to add a pantry cabinet, and no upper cabinets (so we'd need to start fresh with those.) I'm trying to get a sense of how much we would save by refacing our existing base cabinets vs. starting fresh. Obviously, we'd like to do this as affordably as possible while still being happy with the end result.
