The new shingles vaccine, SHINGRIX, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

It has demonstrated to be greater than 90% effective and longer lasting; more effective than the Zostavax shingles vaccine.

By age 85, we have a 50% chance of developing shingles, which can result in the complication of postherpetic neuralgia - chronic nerve pain.

It require 2 injections, 2-6 months apart.

Over age 65, the shingles vaccine is covered under Medicare Part D with varying copayments.

Am encouraging my patients >50 & <65 to check coverage under their commercial insurance.

Encourage all to talk to their health care providers.

Sorry to sound like a drug commercial. This post is meant as a PSA, I have no stock in the company. Don't like seeing older patients in pain that could have been prevented.
