I have different languages depending on who I am speaking with. Then I have a bunch of different ways that I speak with my dog. She likes baby talk the best...HEEHEE! I'm 52 and not too old to baby talk with my dog, "Hers the tweetest wittle gaugie in du worruld". HA!

OH one time someone told me they hated how I always say "HAHA" and "HEEHEE" in my posts. They thought it was so rude and annoying.

I still call the woman who gave birth to me: "Mommy." She is my Mommy. Unless she's annoying me and then she's "Oh Ma ah ah ah oom." I'm 59.

When Harry's acting like he needs to go "out" I say "Does Harry need to pee-pee?" He knows exactly what it means and if he does need out, he heads to the door.

And as for Wyoming Wrangler Butts? Only one word - yummy!

About the only thing that I find irritating online is bullying. Mildly grating is when someone uses twenty exclamation points or question marks in their comments. I don't know why that's irritating to me, and I've never said anything.

That I find any speech habit or pattern or use of language annoying is MY issue, and not the user's.

I don't think it's "grammar police" to not like hearing certain things. There's certainly plenty of opportunity here for grammar police with the way some people talk! LOL And for that matter certain people get so upset over some of the silliest words, especially when someone jokes about something. To each their own.

"Yummy" and "yuck" are the ones that get me. It just makes the person sound like a kid (and that's putting it nice). But I think some intentionally try to do that to kid themselves into not acknowledging their age.

I realize it's more locale upbringing (usually the south) but it does make me chuckle to see a supposedly masculine, macho man calling for his "daddy"!

Go ahead and dislike it, but it's communicative. I know all kinds of erudite ways to say things, but I mostly hang out in Cooking Forum, and I say "yummy" there a lot. Not IRL, I don't think, except maybe with a toddler, but in the forum it's expressive. I also say "veg" or "veggie", but mostly because it's fewer keystrokes. :) As is "IRL" rather than "in real life", whereas I'm too old to say "IRL" in spoken communications.

I have bugaboos too. I hate it when people call bean paste "hummus" unless it's made out of garbanzo beans (=chickpeas), since the word "hummus" means garbanzo bean, and is the name of many dishes have whole garbanzos, rather than paste. OTOH, I don't expect anyone to change what they say just because I find them sloppy in their borrowing of words from other languages.

So, go ahead and hate it, but I'm telling you, roasted eggplant spears with lemon pepper are YUMMY!

Thinking about it, I don't think that I say the word "yummy" IRL either. If I were speaking, I would probably just say "it's SO good" or "it's delicious".

"Yummy" has never been in my vocabulary, but I have eaten a lot of "scrumptious" and "to die for" foods.

The female parent in my circle of friends and relatives is "Mum" not Mom. I know to the British she is Mum also. I wonder if it is a regional term, as when I lived in the Midwest, my neighbors all had a "Mom".

The word that has become popular in just the last year that I dislike is "selfie" . No, I don't have a phone that takes pictures. I don't even want one.

I don't want a smart phone either. I have an old Motorola flip phone for when I take trips and a land line. I certainly don't want to take a picture of my face from 2 ft away. Nightmare.

I heard some girls in the check out line saying "I mean, who has a land line anymore...ugh...." UM I DO!

The comment that makes me crazy is usually by reporters....He or she "went" missing....I can understand some one vanished from sight, disappeared, hasn't been seen but "went" missing....

I do too arkansas_girl. I am guilty of saying several....oh heck, quite a few of these words. Just sat out on the porch in the sun, and it felt awesome after this Michigan winter! What can I say, I am 72 years young! :)

I got a $9 a month promotional deal for 2 years, the best phone plan cox had to offer. Can't be a deal like that. AND I forgot to get it unlisted, talk about telemarketer calls. I unlisted it after a couple of days. Before that my real name could not be found on the net anywhere.

Don't use "yummy" much ... but do say "yuck!" on occasion ...

Don't know why the word "bucks" instead of dollars irritates me, but it does. I also don't like to be hear women being referred to as "chicks."

I'm sure there are other "irritants", but "tummy" for anyone over the age of reason - and most definitely for an adult - is annoying. Stomach or abdomen are perfectly good words.

Truth is online we all type diferently than we actually speak. Add to that all the " LOL ..FML..IDK..IMO". It's just easier to take these shortcuts than to type several words to get a thought across. Especially on a phone! I have command of the English language..have a college education, yet I would still find Wrangler Butts Yummy!

And women who refer to their breasts as "The Girls"

This just happened at our house. My husband fixed himself a big cup of French Vanilla Cappuccino, takes a big SLURP of it and with a big smile on his face he looks at me and says "YUM YUMMY!!!" He's just shy of 60...HAHA!

When I think about all the comments on this thread, I think about how interesting people can be. I like unique people, people who do their own thing and don't worry about what others may think.

Not grammar police here, but dislike using "huge" to refer to anything other than a very large object and overuse of "actually".

I have a love of the language and don't like to see it tossed around. I prefer to use it correctly. I often hear TV announcers using poor grammar and just have to shake my head and wonder where they went to school. The current phrase that irritates me is "loved ones."

TV reporters and anchors... there's something for a thread in itself. Supposedly educated and the grammar used is often atrocious. And today's Magid phrases, everything is "breaking news", we're "tracking" this and that, it's "trending", "here's your forecast", "you won't want to miss this story", "your wakeup weather will be" (and when people awaken at 3 pm?), "at your dinner hour", to say nothing of the teasers and bumpers and all the forced emotion on a story. I'm glad to be out of it. I'd be embarrassed and ashamed to be a part of that. But they're trying to talk like their target audience and clearly the target audience has changed.

I think that it is ok to use cuddly words on appropriate occasions, but I also support dropping slangy and baby talk for the bulk of conversations at an early age, say before the tyke can speak words with understanding. Using proper grammar and pronounciation on a regular basis aids the child in developing good speech habits. When babies first begin to make sounds, they issue a full range of sounds and then begin to drop some sounds while keeping others based on what they hear from their caretaker. As their vocabulary builds, it is important to provide examples of proper usage because these patterns becomes part of that individual and lasts for a lifetime.

Later in life, a person can change his manner and pronunciation of speech with effort . However, underlying his delivery will be his "mother" tongue. For example, I slip up often on the use of was and were. The word, were, was missing in my mother's vocabulary and so it was in mine as a child.

This also points out the great importance of a child's mother for she is his first educator.

Yes, but there are also studies which prove that there's a good reason for babytalk. It actually helps babies learn the sounds of their languages and mothers do it instinctively. There's a similar biological purpose to mothers singing, even if they can't carry a tune. :)

One thing that I've noticed is that the "grammar police" hate to be corrected when they're wrong! LOL!

Anyone else do this? My Mom (in person, I call her Ma) is always saying she is going to the Walmart or the Hannaford. It drives me nuts! I have told her it's not proper grammer but she just laughs at me. I tell her "Ma, it's THE bank or THE store, not THE Walmart, geez!! (oops, am I too old for geez?)

My son gets irritated when I add an s to place names. "Krogers", for instance. What can I say? Habits!

The current one I dislike a lot is baby daddy or baby mama.

Depends on who says it. My twin sister (over 8 years old) occasionally says yummy to describe her feelings about certain things... I find it endearing. However, if someone I dislike says yummy, I'll count that against him/her as well.

One thing on TV food shows that irritates me is when the host says "EVOO extra virgin olive oil". Just say one thing or the other, not both...every....single.....time.....

Oh, I have another one........."looking to" do something, such as "looking to buy a car". I hear it so often that I wonder when it started. I also dislike the overuse of "awesome".

I have a friend that says "pacific" when she means specific, I really struggle with not correcting her....ugh!
