Comments (15)johnh... I meant not to fret, that GH wasn't in the Twilight Zone. :) GH, I live in Chowan County, only about an 1 1/2 from Rocky Mount, after the new road was opened. How long have you been in Maryland? See much snow in your area? Here winters have been very mild these last couple of years but I'm wondering about this one coming. We had first frost about 2 weeks earlier than average. I believe Rocky Mount is Zone 7 (?) and I'm a zone 8 here. Hubby is building me a greenhouse and it isn't completed yet. My bananas have so far survived only because of being on the river with slightly warmer air off the water keeping away the frost. This weekend greenhouse should be operable. YAY! ninecrow.. sorry for getting off topic. I haven't seen any poinsettias with the exception of those at my hubby's plant farm. But, I haven't been shopping in over a week. :)...See MoreFilling in 1st yr (non-blooming) Ps w/ As- how much can I expect?
Comments (10)mmqc-2: I'm a grower and I can tell you for a fact that Many, Many perennials will flower the first year. What ridge top says is true for a plant planted in the ground. It is true that a perennial needs a few year to get established. But that does not mean it will not flower the first year. We grow most of our varieties, 99%, from seed. Our planting schedule always has a target date. This year it's April 29th. Our goal is to have our first year flowering perennials to be in bloom by that date. We schedule our sow dates according to our "weeks to flower" schedule. I'm doing this from memory as I don't have my data readily available. As an example Shastas are about a 23 week to flower. Mind you this is greenhouse conditions. We start shastas in November to meet the Apr. 29th deadline. From memory here's your list: Gallardia Yes will flower 1st year Rudbeckia Yes will flower 1st year Shastas Yes will flower 1st year Hollyhocks Yes will flower 1st year Hybiscus Yes will flower 1st year Asclepias Never grown sry Yarrow Yes will flower 1st year Delphinium Yes will flower 1st year Knautia Yes but not much. Needs to over winter to get established. We would sow in June the previous year. Dianthus Some Yes Some need to be over-wintered Poppies Yes Echinacea You betcha Scabiosa Sry haven't grown Coreopsis Yep, Yep Very well Joe Pye Weed Haven't grown. P.S. Many annuals need much more time then 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date to be large enough to flower. Sapsalilagosis (sp from memory) Vincas, Geraniums, Impatiens, Pansy, Petunias. Out of the 150 varieties we grow our last sow date (except for veggies) is 12 weeks before our target date....See MoreWhite Adeniums flowering 1st time
Comments (9)I didnt buy white seeds, I did buy lots and lots of seeds from Thailand a few years ago, but with two moves of house, I have lost all the labels for them, So each flowering is like a lottery for me, this one flowered for the 1st time after 4 years, I saw a post on this site saying theirs flowered after 6 months, I think that 2 years would be the norm to flower, unless you a fertilizing and possibly using grow lights as well jimmy...See MoreMy 1st graders LOVED their 'Goodbye blooms'
Comments (6)Carlyn-I'm so glad your grandson loves being in the greenhouse with you! I look forward to being a grandma someday (daughter miscarried last year). Redsox-you're so right. Our 22 yo son was just like Steven-that's a big reason I have such a heart for these kids. Peachiekean-I always think of the biblical maxim to "train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is older, he will not depart from it" when I think about exposing kids to nature....gives them a taste for beautiful things of creation and whets their appetites! At least it did that for me-my mom never grew roses, but I still remember plunging my nose into her pink peonies around that age, & swooning! And looking up into a starry night at camp and breathing in the scent of the pines. Susz52-I hadn't really thought about that, but you're so right about kids thinking every gift is store-bought. I think we flower-growers are such children at heart, don't you? Annececilia-thank you..I just know I'm where I'm supposed to be career-wise, as I grew up very artsy/musical but had LDs and visual difficulties (undiagnosed til age 42-about 10 years ago), so I know how many of these kids feel about not "getting it" at school. And Redsox, you're right about expecting so much academically from children at such early ages. So glad you enjoyed this post.... Have you guys ever read the books "Chicken Soup for the Gardener's/Teacher's Soul ?" You would love them! :0) Phyl...See MoreAgartta
