White Adeniums flowering 1st time

Its always good when growing from seed to get a desert rose with no pink or red, this one flowered for the 1st time today, a really nice pure white, this will take pride and place in the adenium collection

The one with red flowers is Matucana madisoniorum. The babies roll down the sides whenever the plant is moved, 2X/yr. This is one of 2 or 3 Matucanas here. They tend to have red flowers, and they sort of look like Cleistocactus samaipatanus or C. winteri. All the Cleistos are beautiful. The one with the red/lime green color scheme flower is probably my favorite plant. As I have downsized, I've kept most of the Cleistos (about 12-15 species). This is the other Matucana, M. tuberculata. got this one from Cactus Cowboy (WY) in 1997. This is the smaller of 2 bloom times. When they get out of the greenhouse and we get days of 90+, I get a few flowers. To get these to bloom well, I put them back into the greenhouse in early August and don't water them for a month. It gets 115+F in there, bakes everything. Then this one erupts with flowers. Here's my favorite Cleisto. C. viridiflorus, seed from Mesa.

Not putting on growth that you could see was normal over winter, as was losing their leaves. In soil that doesn't freeze, there should have been some root development going on. Most hydrangea macrophylla (from your color descriptions I'm assuming that's what these are) bloom on old (growth from the previous year) wood and there is nothing you can do to make them bloom this year if they did not set flower buds. Moving them, instead of letting them become established, isn't helping their growth - each time the roots are disturbed by digging or repotting you are slowing their development. Your plants sound quite young. Adequate water, good drainage, protection from hot mid day sun whether in the ground or in pots, combined with some time and patience may be all you need. If planted in the ground, a mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and cool the soil will be helpful.

Your vines appear to be Ipomoea purpurea (since you say this is a mix, you may find another species mixed in when flowering really gets underway); pink flowers with darker stripes and a white center is a common pattern in this species. I've seen this variety sold under several different names by seed companies and eBay sellers. The other major gardening site has pictures of it under the name Pink Rambler. Ipomoea purpurea varieties mix freely among themselves. This species produces a lot of pollen and is very attractive to bees. If you see any unusual types in your planting you want to be certain of having in the future, you will need to bag or tie off a few of the flowers before they open, mark the resulting pods, and save these seeds. Even then, in this case it isn't certain they will come true since your current vines originated from open pollinated seeds you saved from a mix that itself was probably from an open pollinated source.

I believe it looks like Santa Claus, but has come from a different background, As I have never bought any Santa Claus seeds, I just had a look at what Santa looks like and it is red and white, this seedling has washes of pink running through it, this seedling is a 3rd generation from the seeds that I bought many years ago...Hoping for a seed pod this year, writing a letter to Santa now for my xmas wish lol

The white flower is really nice :) Where did you get the seeds for the white desert rose? I just started a few from seed but it will probably be a long time to find out if they are even close to the parent plant pictured. I am wondering how old the plants have to be before they will flower?

I didnt buy white seeds, I did buy lots and lots of seeds from Thailand a few years ago, but with two moves of house, I have lost all the labels for them, So each flowering is like a lottery for me, this one flowered for the 1st time after 4 years, I saw a post on this site saying theirs flowered after 6 months, I think that 2 years would be the norm to flower, unless you a fertilizing and possibly using grow lights as well

Thanks for your reply. I should probably wait for mine to flower before thinking about ordering any more seeds LOL I am hoping for a semi-double pink and a double red. The double red seedlings are doing great so far and are growing faster than the others. :)

The first seeds I tried to order from a seller in Thailand ended up confiscated in the mail. :( The last seeds I ordered were from Adenium_Ko on ebay. Those arrived ok :)

Jimmy, that sure is a pure white. Some of my whites get so tattered looking as the flowers get light brown blemishes all over them. My Snow White seems to be fairly good but after a couple days of being open it also begins to show the blemishes.

Nice job on getting a flower from your seedlings.
