Ready To Ride The Iditarod Don Jorgensen reports: Two years ago, we introduced you to a Sioux Falls cyclist who embarked on the race of a lifetime; 350 miles in the open wilderness along the Iditarod trail in Alaska. Now he's going back, only this time Joe Stiller is going the distance, 1000 miles all the way to Nome. With temperatures in the 60's, Joe Stiller says it's been a bit of a challenge training for the Iditarod Invitational. "I've been looking for the cold temperatures and thinking that's what my focus is, but in the Iditarod everything can happen," Stiller said. Two years ago Stiller competed in the shorter 350 mile race and finished 8th place. But this time, he's going all the way to Nome. He has a 20 day supply of food that he has marked on this map of where his food should be waiting for him at Eskimo villages; if gets there. He's also expecting extreme weather conditions along the way. "You just have to slip into this event and be prepared for rain and -60 temperatures, I've never been in -60 weather, the coldest I've ever experienced was -40 that was a couple of years ago in International Falls," Stiller said. Stiller has all the cold weather gear he needs already packed and ready to go on his $15,000 custom built bike. "I have similar equipment that it takes to climb Mount Everest, I'll carry on the bike," Stiller said. A bike he hopes will take him to the finish line in what he calls his most grueling and challenging race ever. Stiller leaves Wednesday with the race to start on the 26th.
