I just wanted to tell you that on the Sioux Falls SD news tonight they had a story on there about this bicyclist. He is training now to ride up to the Iditarod. Here is a link if it works This is on KeloLand

Ready To Ride The Iditarod

Don Jorgensen reports:

Two years ago, we introduced you to a Sioux Falls cyclist who embarked on the race of a lifetime; 350 miles in the open wilderness along the Iditarod trail in Alaska.

Now he's going back, only this time Joe Stiller is going the distance, 1000 miles all the way to Nome.

With temperatures in the 60's, Joe Stiller says it's been a bit of a challenge training for the Iditarod Invitational.

"I've been looking for the cold temperatures and thinking that's what my focus is, but in the Iditarod everything can happen," Stiller said.

Two years ago Stiller competed in the shorter 350 mile race and finished 8th place.

But this time, he's going all the way to Nome. He has a 20 day supply of food that he has marked on this map of where his food should be waiting for him at Eskimo villages; if gets there.

He's also expecting extreme weather conditions along the way.

"You just have to slip into this event and be prepared for rain and -60 temperatures, I've never been in -60 weather, the coldest I've ever experienced was -40 that was a couple of years ago in International Falls," Stiller said.

Stiller has all the cold weather gear he needs already packed and ready to go on his $15,000 custom built bike.

"I have similar equipment that it takes to climb Mount Everest, I'll carry on the bike," Stiller said.

A bike he hopes will take him to the finish line in what he calls his most grueling and challenging race ever.

Stiller leaves Wednesday with the race to start on the 26th. He's hoping to make it to Nome in 19 days. You can follow the race onStiller's Facebook page or the Iditarod Invitational web site.

BURRRRRR riding in Alaska sounds way to cold to me. ;)

Actually friends of mine rode from Alaska to San Diego, took November off, and are now in Mexico, on their way to Argentina.

Thanks Jem! I squeezed the page stating bye Lake Michigan in, and the website automatically puts the next day/date in, every time I put in the next day's entry. I had no idea I was off. yup, as you can see, I love riding! But I do have support! I have spent several nights cost free in a fellow cyclists home. This is a HUGE support. But then I host cyclists all the time too. i knew I would take a chance on that trail, and it was ok, even good at the beginning. Sometimes things work out one way, and sometimes another. It's all good! someone remarked earlier about my room mate situation, and I can't find that now. I will have one when I come back. She is moving in after her lease is up. It will be my next adventure I guess. :) Moni

There are lots of very nice people in Texas, but it has more than its share of people who are not nice, from my experience. I think the same was true of San Francisco when I lived there, and there were definitely neighborhoods in SF that I would not go through, particularly skid row (6th Street south of Market). All places are changing now, it seems, and nothing is like it used to be. If you lived in Mission back in the 1960s, you might know of my friends there, Enrique Flores, for one, who owned a movie theater and showed old Mexican movies. He also owned an art gallery called Estudios Rio, and he sold custom handmade jewelry that he made, mostly out of silver. My other friend, Xavier, was an artist who sold paintings at that art gallery. I have so many horror stories to tell from growing up in Texas that I will not even begin to try to tell any more of them. Let's just say that cowboys in central Texas did NOT like me. I was not cut out to be a farm boy. I've heard that The Valley has become dangerous, especially Brownsville. One of my first roommates in college was from McAllen, and I also had an aunt who lived there. I have a cousin in Mathis (just west of Corpus Christi) who had a crop dusting plane that he converted to use to drop beneficial spiders and insects on crops, but the big chemical companies went after him and tried everything to put him out of business. His story was shown on an episode of 60 Minutes, and an article in the March 1989 Texas Monthly magazine. Buddy, however, had a cruel personality, like many of the men in my family.
