I don't think everything has to "match". If you are wanting a gray roof you could paint your house blue. There are so many beautiful shades of blue that would go well with gray. Also I don't think the colors on the outside have to match the ones on the inside.

If this is the color scheme you like best, by all means go with the grey's for the exterior. I would just pick out a lively accent color and enjoy the results!

Absolutely no need to match inside to outside colors. Cool colors on the outside and warm ones on the inside sound lovely.

If you live in zip code 91710, you should seriously consider light colored, heat-reflecting cool shingles. A major contributor to heat in your house during hot weather is the amount of heat that accumulates in your attic. Lighter color shingles, and especially the new products that reflect rather than absorb sunlight, can make a huge comfort difference.

For me, a roof is a functional item as well as an appearance one. Both are important but the thought of finding a suitable lighter color and cool-functioning roof should have equal priority to appearance for people who live in hot areas.

Yes, Elmer.....we have to have the cool shingles here. It's code. And were putting in a few of the heat vent things too. Plus we have a whole house fan, and hubby is looking into solar gable vents. Lol. So, functionable, it will be. It's the damn color that's causing me to go crazy.

Hareball, is that your house? It's very pretty. Ours is a ranch with natural brick pillars, and the trim and garage door are white.

The outside of my house is Browns and Beige. My inside is Beige with grey walls, grey tiles and beige carpet it came that way. I am getting ready to paint the inside with a more light blueish grey and replace my floors with a white marble look so no where will it look like the outside of my home. Now mind you I live in an HOA and my house came this way and is expected to stay that way outside unless I go to the HOA and request a color change but I will still be required to stay in the color scheme they have chosen. The outside reflects them with some of my colorful accents outside, but the inside once I am done will reflect me. More color and no way look like my outside.

Gable vents are good, along with ridge vents or bug-eye ones.

From what I've read, whole house fans aren't recommended by experts anymore because the opening between the house and the attic will transmit a lot of heat down into the house (and cold in the winter) when not in use. Unless it has a solid cover (and not just closing louvers).

If your house has A/C (and it must where you are), a well vented attic and a permanently closed portal to the attic (formerly used for the whole house fan) may provide more efficient comfort for you.

Our house has a prominent (10/12) slate grey roof over off-white brick and stucco. That has nothing to do with my interior decor. One room is even glossy "Hershey Chocolate Wrapper" brown. There are not many places you can see the exterior from interior rooms here, but it wouldn't matter to me if you could.

It might be surprising to find Rustic furnishings of any color inside a French chateau.

It wouldn't occur to me to match the color of my roof with the interior of my home! Our roof, replaced just a few years ago, was chosen from dozens that would complement the first story of our home, a light hued washed brick.

ritamay91710 no it's not mine. I looked up gray roof blue house and it stood out to me :) I like a lot of color. I feel if done right you can use all sorts of colors and come out with something beautiful. I hope you find something you like and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Things don't have to match to go well together. :)

I agree that it doesn't need to match; you just need to love both! I live in the forest, in a NW style home, so have always chosen colors that blend with foliage, tree trunks in nature. I couldn't do some of the colors I see on houses in the city, it would just look odd in our neighborhood. No white or blue houses here.

shades of grays, dark browns, beiges & grieges can all blend nicely. throw in some black and your house will look stunning!!

i am an earth tone person, so my outside does match my inside.... i always go back to earth tones!! just relaxing to me :)

my accent colors inside my home are dark orange(terra cotta), red and earthy greens.

i like the feeling/look of bringing the outside in...

I've never tried, nor considered matching the colors inside & out. But.....it has turned out that way. Makes the patio cushions blend & it flows. I have red accent rugs indoors, red patio cushions outdoors....and so on......

Then my pale grey house, w/ grey roof & chimney stack, w/ black trim & shutters....the interior is "touch of grey" throughout.

Funny you should ask... I just finished painting my exterior. I moved in two years ago, and I'm changing it all to my tastes. Once colder weather hits and the garden slows down, it's back to the inside for awhile. The first year, I painted the kitchen Homburg Grey. Love it! Dark and brooding? Nope. The southwestern facing room is scorching and it tones down the sunlight beating on you. I love light as much as, or more, than most people. But it was too much. Painted my son's bathroom a sort of blue, green, grey (sea salt maybe? Can't remember the name of that). So what to paint the rooms inbetween? Entryway, living room and dining room. Decided a month ago, I loved this particular blue. It ended up being on the same paint chip as my exterior paint, a couple of shades lighter. It's looking like I will paint my interior the same as the exterior. Without regard to the roof. It'll have to be replaced in another 5-10 years, so I ignored it.

I really like your home (ETA: oops, I guess I mean the one Hareball posted). I wouldn't even notice the exterior to the interior contrast/colour changes.

Never ever had the thought that outside should match the inside. My 180-year-old house has always been white and I would never change it. The Shutters have always been dark dark green, but I added a red trim to the windows. Inside all the walls are the original white horsehair plaster with painted baseboards, windowsills, and chair railings.

robb333, funny you brought it up....I was thinking of painting our exterior the same color as our master bedroom. Nantucket Gray. I love it, and it's actually not gray at all, it's a pretty sage green. But I can't seem to find a roof color that would be good with it. That's why I figured it would be easier to go with a grayish mix roof.

I’ve never thought about it because our house is neutral with off white siding and a gray roof but I really don’t see how it would matter.

What I have found to be more important is that the decor or design of the interior matches the overall style of the house. For example, our neighbor has a beautiful home with an exterior that is kind of rustic, but the remodel they just did is all contemporary. Separately they are each great but put together, it feels off to me.

I’m not sure I understand why a gray roof would require you to repaint the exterior though. Gray’s a neutral and looks great with most anything.

I was actually going to mention green also. I love sage green and I think a light gray would go really well with it. :)

The house needs to be painted anyways. It's been a long time. Right now it's a yucky too peach-y tan. I hate it. : )

I found some pictures of houses with gray roofs that are painted in BM Nantucket and I think it looks really sharp.

I also like this example which is a slightly darker sagey gray by BM, Copely Gray. IMO, both examples are really pretty with the gray roofs and either should look great with a natural brick color as well.

I was once told that you want your front door to complement your interior when the door is opened into the house. I'm not sure about matching, but I personally wouldn't mic the browns and grays unless I planned to repaint everything.

I chose a black roof for my house because black matches every single colour out there. And my roofer noticed that all my neighbours have shades of grey or brown on my block. lol I had to be different.

I would collect samples of all your finishes and choose an exterior paint color that works with all of them. Gray composite shingles usually have multiple colors in them so you should be fine. Gray comes in every hue so if you choose a shade of gray for exterior paint, pick a hue that works with everything.

I have a gray roof, galvalume gutters (unpainted), beige deck with dark brown railing. It looks awesome with the white house. The gray trim pulls it all together. Outdoor deck furniture is taupe. You just need the right combination of shades, and the right amount of repetition and visual relief. My gray trim color was carefully selected by a pro and it is a lot browner than the cool blue shades I am normally drawn to.

Be aware of the entry points, because those are the places it might bug you. Whatever you can see in one view should go together. This was an issue when I was choosing tile for my foyer. As much as I wanted a pale blue mosaic border, it conflicted with the exterior red brick and wrought iron-look door mat and exterior decor. I opted for taupe instead. Less visual clutter and conflict.

No, the exterior colors do not have to match the interior. Why would they? It could be a bit odd if the exterior was, for example like a log cabin and you went inside and it had an extreme modern decor interior...HA!

Most of us are attracted do certain colors, whether they be the exterior of our house, the roof, our interior design and even our clothes and the car we drive. It is not an attempt, conscious or otherwise, to "match" - it's just the colors that attract us.
