OK I explain. It is a floating floor what we call in the UK engineered floor, so it is not solid throughout but a thickness of the wood mounted on a plywood base. It is a Malaysian wood, not so hard, so I suppose high heels could dent it perhaps, it is not the hardest. It is a click system not requiring glue, interesting. Now from Malaysia it says it has five factory coatings of which some contain aluminium oxide. It got worn out over the years. So a year ago I sanded the wood with the machines with the correct paper and vacuumed well. Then I applied one coat of Bona Traffic silk, you know the glossy one. I then noticed a number of parts were very coarse to the touch. So after some hours I sanded again with slightly finer paper but still coarse. Now I applied again Bona. Once again certain areas were coarse to the touch and you could see stains. So now I did a final very fine sanding but this was by hand with very fine paper particularly in the areas affected. It took me hours. Then I applied the third coat. I called the Bona representative who was at a loss!!! He gave me a bottle of Bona "refresh" it is a type of product to do another pass over. I applied it to the worse parts of the floor. Although one could see areas which were coarse to the touch and which did not look quite right the shine was sufficient to fool guests for Christmas. Now I am exactly one year on. In those area I mentioned there are now black marks. I attach some photos of the present situation with example of the black marks. (sorry I do not know how to create a new thread). I want to sand it and apply Bona again before New Year when my mother is visiting, my wife will just about tolerate me sanding on the 27th Dec. I had the suspicion it was the Bona product maybe the bottle I bought was old or had been exposed to low temperatures where I bought it from but the Bona representative told me it was very unlikely to be the case.

I have the same problem! It's so frustrating. We 104 year old white pine floors that we refinished and coated with Bona. A sealer and two coats. We used a sealer and two coats on the Doug fir floors elsewhere in our house and they are VERY smooth, the floor is like one continuum. We refinished maple floors in our former home - no problem there. The oak has tons of grain rise. So so bumpy. I thought it might be due to a) the large-ish gaps between most of the boards - the poly got thinned out as it sank into the holes and b) short cure time of the sealer since the weather was cool and damp. I lightly sanded between the coats of poly. Our plan is to buff, recoat and repete. Do you guys think the rentalable buffer would sand it down enough?

I'm not an expert on Oiled floors, but it is possible to add more finishing oil to them. This can happen as soon as they are installed (installers will often to this for commercially installed floors = extra wear protection) or every so often as the floors start to show wear or reduction of finish in some areas. You can dig out your care and maintenance instructions and all three different types of maintenance products (oil cleaner, oil "repair" product and oil "finish"). Read the instructions carefully to see which product will help you the most. Some of these Factory UV oil coatings need to be treated inside the first 6 months (full application of the finish oil), where as others just need the spot application in high-wear areas (such as traffic spots in hallways and in kitchens). I hope Ultimate Hardwood drops by. He's big on oil finishes. He'll offer some tips on how to go about keeping your oiled wood happy and healthy for years....But while you wait, dig out your maintenance instructions and ALL of your maintenance products that you where clever enough to purchase at the time you purchased your floors. You may need to do a full application or a large 'spot' application in the areas you are worried about.

I am a DIYer who has used Natural Seal. It does not go down easily, and the installer should have familiarity with it before applying it on a paid job. It has a white pigment to lighten the wood in it that you can't see until it dries so careful application is critical. These are "lap marks," where his roller strokes overlapped with previous strokes, resulting in a double application of the pigmented primer in those places. You have two options: 1) Try to get your money back and find someone who knows how to use this product to do it right 2) Have your installer start over and use Bona Classic Seal. It doesn't have any pigment, so you won't run into this problem. Trade-off is that it won't lighten your floors like the Natural Seal, but it also won't darken them like oil-based poly either.
