Need help- UV oiled wood floor sealing

Hi all,

i was hoping someone could give me some advice on stains on our engineered UV white oiled floor. We got this new floor put in 6 months ago and I have been using Woca natural soap every week to build up the oil but we still seem to be getting stains from anything dropping on the floor! I am going insane following everyone around with a cloth to catch any water or food drops and wondered if anyone could advise on what to do so I don't need to worry about staining! I love the light white look of our floor and it being matt and so natural looking I would hate to change this! Pictures below:

Having read about this brand, it seems that the Woca natural soap is just a cleaning agent, not a finish.The Material Safety Data Sheets list the ingredients as detergents and soap. The company info says the product provides a thin layer of coconut/soy fats, which are non drying oils. Non drying oils are not good protection, IMHO.

The finish products are drying oils(Linseed/tung/etc.) that actually harden to provide protection.

I'm not an expert on Oiled floors, but it is possible to add more finishing oil to them. This can happen as soon as they are installed (installers will often to this for commercially installed floors = extra wear protection) or every so often as the floors start to show wear or reduction of finish in some areas.

You can dig out your care and maintenance instructions and all three different types of maintenance products (oil cleaner, oil "repair" product and oil "finish"). Read the instructions carefully to see which product will help you the most.

Some of these Factory UV oil coatings need to be treated inside the first 6 months (full application of the finish oil), where as others just need the spot application in high-wear areas (such as traffic spots in hallways and in kitchens).

I hope Ultimate Hardwood drops by. He's big on oil finishes. He'll offer some tips on how to go about keeping your oiled wood happy and healthy for years....But while you wait, dig out your maintenance instructions and ALL of your maintenance products that you where clever enough to purchase at the time you purchased your floors. You may need to do a full application or a large 'spot' application in the areas you are worried about.

The painters are working on correcting there mess. I will find out today if they in fact did fix the problems. We are building and we have a builder but they allow us to be the project managers. This way we save quite a bit. My husband is an engineer and has been an amazing project manager. We had to build up 16 feet. Ouch!

If you're referring to WOCA Wood Cleaner (http://www.wocadirect.com/wood-cleaner/), it should be used before the initial oiling and can be used before subsequent re-oilings. The name is a bit misleading but thankfully there are ready resources these days to find out what a product is for and how to use it. Even then it can be a bit confusing, like when using the Rubio site to determine how to treat your worn floor. Then my Rubio rep. nonchalantly told me ignore all the website instruction, mix the Soap 100:1 in a spray bottle, mist and mop, re-oil the floor every year or two with the same oil as used to finish originally. I'm loathe to admit that my one year old Rubio White oiled floor has only been vacuumed, never mopped. Twice I bought and mixed the Soap and ended up giving them to a customer. I'm an oil convert, as long as people don't mind taking on a little extra maintenance. While spray painting a paneled wall, blasts of air loosened my floor masking. By the time I finished, paint had dried. I carefully scraped, cleaned with some lacquer thinner, sanded with 120 grit paper and re-oiled. It looks flawless. With a poly finish this mistake could have been a disaster. Bona does have a product called Natural Oil Floor Cleaner. I bought one to test but haven't had a chance yet. I'll use it on a showroom floor or my own home rather than a customer's floor. These manufacturers can't all be formulating their own finishes and cleaners. It's probably best to buy the one you suspect is the same as OEM and try it on a sample or a remote section of the floor.

IMO, if we were just looking at a floor sample, the one on the left is my favorite. HOWEVER, we are talking about a floor in a room.. so I'd choose the one on the right. My 2 cents.... Even though I prefer dark floors and like the floor on the left because it's so dramatic and interesting, we just chose a floor that is very similar to the one on the right! I have a couple of friends who put in a floor that looks similar to the one on the right, too. They have an oil finish and they are very happy. It looks stunning and shows off the real wood. They are in homes with big budgets and great designers, fwiw. Ours wont be an oil finish, but not for any good reason.. it's just not what our floor person chose to give to provide the very matte look we want. For their homes and ours, we like floor that is less formal and lighter because they are easier to live with. My designer said you want the floor to be a beautiful backdrop to your home and you don't want it to compete with what's inside (depending on your style of course). He also said that the lighter and more natural look will be more timeless. It's not to say he doesn't do dark floors, but it just depends on the overall design. He did a black floor for a friend that is stunning. Floors have been really really light lately, but the tone on the right and what we are choosing is a safer choice VS the danish almost white floors that I am nuts over. You are right, lighter go better with MCM or more causal homes. They'll hide pet hair better. Darker floors are stunning for a more formal home. As someone else mentioned, the floor on the left won't be great with walnut furniture. Too much prominent grain competing. The floor on the right, again, is a gorgeous backdrop to whatever you do. I can't imagine you getting sick of it. The nice thing is that a floor with an oil finish that shows the real wood, as mentioned, will look much better with wear and tear. When a floor is perfect, every blemish will stand out and drive you nuts. When it's wire brushed and left fairly natural, each scratch will just look like it's supposed to be there and part of the wood. We are starting out with flaws on purpose just so I don't go batty when someone drags a chair across the room :)

The "Maintenance of hardwood floors with Silk Oil finish assumes regular (daily if necessary) cleaning from dust and grit using a vacuum, followed by a thorough cleaning with Coswick Hardwood Floor Cleaner or other similar product." Is 100% normal for hardwoods. The sweeping vacuuming 2-5 times per week is a normal requirement for hardwood (and vinyl and laminate and cork and linoleum). The 'followed by' part does not mean 'immediately afterwards'. A regular 'damp' cleaning (for poly = water only) is 1/week. A regular wood cleaner (for poly) is 1-2 per MONTH. The Silk Oil will be closer to the polyurethane side of things than the oil side of things. Don't get discouraged by the 'maintenance'. These statements are everywhere for hardwood. The part that is closer to hardwax oil is: "In areas where traffic is most intense, it is recommended to periodically apply Coswick restorative cleaners for oiled floors. Such floor cleaners consist of up to 10% wax, and, in addition to cleaning the floor surface from dirt, they renew worn-down finish." The reappliction of the 'oil' back onto the finish is normal for hardwax oils. In essence this finish is a temporary "ail acrylates" 'polish'. The 4 layers means they have thrown down plenty of waxy finish...that needs a bit of a boost from time to time. My issue is the wire brushing. This is a texture that is known to cause issues with cooking oils and spills. I would personally purchase a box of the floor to test test test the finish out for a few months. After that test, you decide if you can handle the high wearing waxy finish and the wire brush texture. European Oak normally requires a HEALTHY budget. Where are you located and what is your total budget and your square footate?

Hi both, thanks for all your comments so far. I have done as you mentioned and looked at all the recommend products to use (I forgot to mention our floor is the lamett Oslo white wood floor). I have discovered the woca maintenance oil and was thinking of trying this to get an extra protective layer. Anyone know if this could do the trick? Thanks again

Purchase and use the products required for your floor. The maintenance oils often have a "colour" component. This colour can help add the white back into the floor. A basic oil like Woca won't have the colour...just the oil.

Contact the manufacturer and purchase what they say is needed for your floor. It is the easiest way to go....and doesn't void your warranty. If they mention Woca...then go for it. If they have their own line, then best stick with their line. It keeps things nice and simple should something go wrong.
