HELP! What size mirror for 72inch vanity?

Help! I am struggling to find a mirror appropriately sized for our 72 inch vanity.

I've heard the mirror should be the same length as the vanity. I've also heard it should be 1-2 inches smaller on either side... what is the right way??

The vanity is 39in tall and the mirror in the pic below is about the same height. I'm not crazy about this mirror at all, but haven't found many affordable options that are 72x39in. The last pic below with drywall is the actual vanity space. It will be a tight fit in that niche.

I would prefer two mirrors centered over the sinks, but the vanity only has a few inches on either side of the rectangular sinks and it would be too close to the walls (with an awkward space in between mirrors). The vanity is 72in and the space it fits in is between the shower wall and bathroom wall. SO I think I have to use a single mirror. The master bathroom is large with 8 foot ceilings, so a large mirror would fit the space.

Sidenote--My husband is 6"1 and I am 5"3 so the mirror needs to be tall enough to not cut his head off, but also positioned low enough that I can still see myself. :)

We picked out a single light fixture with 4 lights. Also, the pic with mirror is NOT THE FINAL WALL COLOR! We will go with a super subtle, light grey. It's also currently in the master bedroom--not the bath.

Also, backsplash or no backsplash?

I think with the super high ceilings you could do two tall mirrors and it would look nice. If you needed something for between the two mirrors you could add a candle sconce or something along those lines?

Thank you for your help! That's a good thought! Unfortunately, we've already primed the new drywall and have a single light electrical set up, so I think I'm stuck with a single mirror now based on the lighting.

There also wouldn't be room for sconces on either side of the mirrors since the frames would be right next to the shower wall/bedroom wall if we had 2 so it wouldn't look as nice as yours!

Thank you so much for your help! We actually do need the tower for storage as the bathroom is not very big at all. It currently has a bulky built in linen closet on the left hand side of the vanity and the current vanity is even smaller (60") that my husband and I have shared for 10 years. So while I'd LOVE more counter space, even the extra 9" we are gaining feels like a lot for us. We put the tower on the right because it is next to the wall when you walk in the door which keeps it from being in the middle of the room breaking it up. It helps that the top part of the tower sets back on top about 6" from the facing of the lower cabinets to make it feel less intrusive. I am concerned that a 3-light fixture may make it feel more congested, but I just don't know as it seems there would be room for it.. Is more light better or would a 2-light be better for scale? I do love symmetry, and you have no idea how much it pains me to not have a perfectly symmetrical vanity.. But it really is the best option for the space due to how tight the bathroom is as a whole. The tub is directly in front of the vanity (about 4.5' walking space) which also sits in front of a window providing a lot of natural light in the room.

You can have mirror cut to any size by a glass shop, but if this is a bathroom that is used every day for getting ready in the morning (not the powder room), if I were you I would engage an electrician to have sconces on either side of a smaller mirror. The light you get from sconces is much, much better than overhead lighting. This isn't a big job and if you pay for it once you'll have it forever. A decorative mirror will look better than a big mirror too. If you do go with a big mirror, frame it in some type of molding so it doesn't look like a tract home mirror.

I understand. That is not my bathroom. I wish it was!

I am sure you can find a mirror you like. You can always get an unframed large mirror at Home Depot or somewhere they sell frameless mirrors and then you can add a frame yourself.

Our mirrors in the three bathrooms are all smaller than the counters but they're actually mounted a few inches above them, like the long mirror above, and they all have frames. I really prefer that look. That's a very pretty piece of furniture you have although I'm used to the drawers being on the side, as in the picture above by aktillery.

Thank you for this question! I'm running into the exact issue. We've had one large mirror over a 72" vanity for years. Now we are in the process of updating, and think we'll go with a large mirror (71"), thin metal frame and double lighting over the top.

Home Depot offers some nice options for mirrors.
