Need help with size of mirror over a 68 inch vanity.

Our vanity is very odd. It is 68 inches with only 1 sink. We are painting the vanity and walls. I was hoping to put sconces on each side of the mirror but I think it may be too complex to move the wires. If we leave the lights on the sides where they are now, what size/shape mirror would be best?

A mirror as big as the vanity niche and a bit taller than the sconces so the entire sconce will be reflected in the mirror.

If you want to use a medicine cabinet I would probably stay with the 24 inch and use side lights. You'll need to keep in mind that a bar light above the medicine cabinet will need to extend enough to clear the depth of the cabinet, so finding such a light may be difficult. There are cabinets that have built-in lights so you may want to look at those. Check these out. If you choose a cabinet with built-in lights, I'd go with a wider than 24" cabinet. Other option: keep the light fixture you have and put in a framed, or unframed mirror that is a little wider than the lights. Here are some visuals.

Is the vanity in an alcove? If so, mirror the entire alcove and have the glass company cut the mirror for mounted sconces on the mirror. You could also do this if there's no adjacent walls or one wall, and you may have to. You have 38" to fit a mirror and two sconces (countertop overhangs an inch or so). I would want at least 3" between the sconce shade and mirror and the sconce and the wall, so 3" + 3" + width of sconce. I have a 24" mirror over a 36" vanity, which is a fine size for the mirror, but that leaves only 7" for a sconce between the mirror and wall. If you used a smaller than 24" mirror, the sconces might be too close together. I read that 30" - 36" is the optimal spacing for sconces. I always draw this stuff up on graph paper to check spacing and proportions.

In terms of proportion anyway. But you're right, round mirrors are a little different. I wouldn't get one any larger than 40". Also, if you get a frame you may want to match it to your hardware. Here is a photo of a round mirror with a size proportional to your vanity. Of course the placement of the mirror also depends on how tall you are. I wouldn't get a round mirror any larger than this.

I think if you slide the mirrors a bit toward the middle, and leave room in the middle, you could do sconces on either side of the mirror and a sconce in the middle. Look for a sconce that has thin vertical lighting. I've never like lighting over a mirror. We look much better with side lighting from both sides. Are these mirrors medicine cabinets? If they are then plan carefully for the opening of the doors to the medicine cab. I will take a picture tomorrow and show you what we did. We may have a bit more room than you but I think it would work for you.

You can have mirror cut to any size by a glass shop, but if this is a bathroom that is used every day for getting ready in the morning (not the powder room), if I were you I would engage an electrician to have sconces on either side of a smaller mirror. The light you get from sconces is much, much better than overhead lighting. This isn't a big job and if you pay for it once you'll have it forever. A decorative mirror will look better than a big mirror too. If you do go with a big mirror, frame it in some type of molding so it doesn't look like a tract home mirror.

I like the mirror that is hanging there…with your sconces on either side of it. (I am assuming that you are keeping both?). I think they look lovely together. The space is not awkward. Is this a guest bath? The Master? Do you need more than one sink? If not…keep it a single. And then…fabulous wallpaper????
