what size & where to buy decent mirrors over vanities
Comments (11)A few suggestions... There's a Restoration Hardware outlet at the Tulalip Outlet mall so you might find a few deals there. ( I remember you mentioned living in Edmonds, so it might be worth the drive up north.) Or, as Babs suggested, having a glass and mirror shop custom make a nice beveled mirror is very reasonable. When we remodeled our master bath we made a frame with some nice trim/molding that we bought from our cabinet maker (to match our cabinets) and had a mirror with an extra large bevel to fit in the frame. For our guest bathroom I found a simple, wide, solid wood, oversized picture frame at Aaron Bros. on sale for $20, and a local glass shop put a beveled mirror in it for me for $40. It looks fabulous! (We used a metal bracket called a hangman which makes it easy and safe to hang large, heavy objects.) In regards to the size, personally I think bigger is better, especially vertically. I've always noticed nicer hotels have wonderfully large mirrors - they really add a feeling of spaciousness to what are usually small rooms....See MoreIs there a size rule for mirror over vanity?
Comments (16)I have a linen cabinet and vanity being custom made, and need to decide what size of mirror to put there. The linen cabinet is 14" (and tall), vanity is 40" right next to linen cabinet. The rectangular sink (17") is not centered on the vanity, it will be more to the right which means I can't put a mirror in the center of the vanity, it won't look good. So, I can order 40" mirror that covers all open space above vanity or put standard mirror right above sink. But I'm not sure having mirror that is not centered will look that good. Comments (6)In terms of proportion anyway. But you're right, round mirrors are a little different. I wouldn't get one any larger than 40". Also, if you get a frame you may want to match it to your hardware. Here is a photo of a round mirror with a size proportional to your vanity. Of course the placement of the mirror also depends on how tall you are. I wouldn't get a round mirror any larger than this....See MoreHelp! Comments (5)The important distance to consider is the distance between the center of the vanity to the center of one sink. That distance never changes regardless of the size of the mirror. The wider the mirror, the less distance you have between the sconce and the mirror. If my calculation is right based on the measurements you gave, that distance is 21" (please confirm it as I don't explicitly see it on the measurements you gave us). The distance between the edge of the sconce and the edge of the 24" mirror is 6.25". This number came from that calculation: 21" -2.75" (half the width of the sconce) - 12 (half the width of a 24" wide mirror) = 6.25". Now if you use a 36" mirror, the distance between the edge of the sconce to the edge of the mirror would be .25" ( 21" - 2.75 - 18"). You don't want a quarter in. wall between the sconce and the mirror. If you were to find a 28" wide mirror, that distance would be 4.25" ( 21" - 2.75 - 14"). I think the width of the sconce is more in proportion with a 24" mirror. I also think a 24" mirror looks nicer with a 27.5 wide cabinet below it....See Morejatinahuja
