I have Syringa palibin and really enjoy it. it seems very fragrant and comparable to the vulgaris only not quite as strong. It's a good substitute. The shrub is much more attractive to me. It has a different leaf, smaller. It has a nice rounded shrubby form rather than a lanky, leggy heavy form. It doesn't sucker. It has some fall color which is nice. And I've had no problems with it and no mildew and very little care. And it blooms in less than full sun.

I have two of these bushes. They bloom every year but it did take a few years. They are a very light yellow. I’m wondering if the acidity of the soil makes any difference. I bought them from Spring Hill. The first time, they didn’t make it through the winter. They were sold out so I didn’t get any replacement. I ordered again the following year. That was over 12 years ago. I have written to Spring Hill that the yellow is not as intense as the photos but they never bothered to respond.

I'd consider it splitting hairs :-) As noted, it IS a lilac and does produce fragrant flowers (white) that could be just as much as an irritant to your spouse as the old fashioned common lilac. How about a Korean dogwood (Cornus kousa) or a tree-form hydrangea? Neither produce a fragrance, if that is the primary concern. Or are particularly heavy pollen producers.
