To control the size, begin a 3-year long rejuvenation program while fully
dormant and leafless (in winter) so you can see the stems' skeleton without foliage. On each year, you reduce the total number of stems by 1/3 as you wish. For example, in year 1, prune all the way down the 1/3 longest number of stems and leave the remaining 2/3 of the stems unpruned. In year two, prune all the way down and the next 1/3 longest stems and leave the rest of the stems unpruned. In year 3, prune
all the way down the last 1/3 number of stems and leave the rest of the stems unpruned. Pruning is an activity that can trigger leaf out and new stem growth so it is best done when the shrub is fully dormant. Rejuvenating a hydrangea that only blooms on new wood in winter will not affect future blooms. If you rejuvenate a hydrangea that blooms on old wood or on both old and new wood, this type of pruning will reduce blooms in spring but since you only cut 1/3 of the stems, it should not entirely eliminate flower buds.

Alternatively, consider contacting gardening clubs to see if they can sell them.
