GW messed up again?
Comments (14)I got my profile page to update, you need to include some information such as name, birthdate that may have been empty to get it to update (make stuff up if you don't want to reveal something; I didn't figure out precisely what I needed to include). There is no message that you are missing information, I only got it to update correctly by guesswork. And, oddly enough my zone information there I changed to remove spaces but it is using my old data when I post, so it didn't fix the zone display anyway. Comments (4)Mrs G: I do add extra shading during chill cycle. That helps keep it cooler during the day. Also I run the evaporative cooler. These together allow me to keep it 5-12F cooler inside than outside during the day. Pollination is by hand or mostly bumblebees. Patty: There is another relationship published by A&M that relates chill hrs to mean temp during the two coldest months. Using that gives estimates of: Vista 66/46 = 56F mean = ~500 chill hours Modesto 54/40 = 47F mean = ~1050 chill hours greenhouse 55/37 = 46F = ~1100 chill hours Greenhouse was only 56 days rather than 60 but that should still equate to ~1,000 chill hrs more like I was thinking. Maybe I'm not short on chilling but I've tried working through other ideas and keep coming up short. Here is a link that might be useful: A&M temperature vs chilling in figure 1...See Morei messed up, i need advice with lawn renovation
Comments (19)Hi everyone. I have a problem similar to Ty's, but until I got here and read this thread, I didn't know I'd done anything wrong. I was in fact roaming around the site trying to figure out what to do about the aphids on my honeysuckle, and why a small, thorny, rose?-bush was yellowing insanely. I came to this thread just to make sure I hadn't done anything Ty did, but I think I have. I'm a total Newbie (just signed up last night), I'm doing this alone with no actual from-scratch gardening experience except sowing seeds indoors, and a bit of pruning under my belt. My house plants are all quite healthy, and I've been known to be a recovery center for the ailing plants of friends and family members. Tackling an entire garden seemed slightly insane to me, but I thought it would be a rewarding challenge. I'm going to start a new thread with my specific issues, but I thought it best to begin here since this is where my panic began. I live in zip 11354/11357. What was once a lush lawn of kentucky blue, cared for by my parents and their hired landscapers, became overrun with weeds and zero grass over the 2 years since they moved to another home. They planned on selling this house quickly, so we weren't putting any money or time into landscaping here, but things have changed and now I'm trying to make it beautiful and my own, as I will probably be here for a few more years. I have virtually no garden tools (I know you'll yell at me for this) but I put down some weed-killer with a hose, then borrowed a garden claw from a family friend, and have spent the last 3 weeks tearing up the ground and manually pulling out roots of weeds, digging deep into the dirt with my hands to get as much root out as possible. I finally finished the area I'd like to use as a lawn, but have noticed little green sprouts popping up in the areas I'd tackled weeks ago. Do I go over it again with weedkiller? I've not planted anything new as I only finished tearing up the area last night. I will attempt to post pics of my before and after. There are far more issues happening around the yard right now, but I'll stick to this to keep it relevant to this post. Before mid-way through: current: HELPPPPPP...See MoreI'm a mess and way too hung up on labels and rules. Help me!
Comments (147)Beth, I have been so delighted and educated with all these posts. I love the evolution of your wonderfully charming home! You are an amazing woman! I share several of the decorating dilemmas you've mentioned. My "living room" is about 2' more narrow and 2' shorter than your area. I'm learning a lot from your post. The repurposed gun cabinet idea is absolute genius. Please share a photo when you've installed the shelves and contents. Regarding the non-glare glass for your larger artwork. The price of non-glare glass has become simply ridiculous. I have an entire hallway lined with (Gasp!) a family gallery wall. It includes photos from more than 100 years ago to this year's school pics of the great-nephew. Color, colorized, sepia toned, black and white, all mixed together and mostly in their original mismatched frames. That just about breaks all the rules, but I love my wall. Several of the older photos - Mom's 1954 graduation photo; MIL's 1952 wedding photo, etc. - had plain glass. I can't tolerate the glare either. I made a note in my iPod of all the frame sizes that needed replacement non-glare glass. Every time I'm at a thrift shop or yard sale I check out the "frames" area. You can often find large pictures that may be in horrid frames, but they will have non-glare glass! I buy the frame, take out the glass, and toss the rest. I found one very large print of ballet slippers framed with non-glare that was big enough to cut down into several pieces. It made one 8x10 and three 5x7 pieces of non-glare glass for my wall, all for $1. With their permission, I took the glass out at the shop, tossed the faded print, and re-donated the empty frame back to them....See Moredeanna in ME Barely zone 6a, more like 5b
