Livening Up a Daylily Border? Help!
Comments (30)Those pictures are the 'before' to my recent bed widening project. The plants were competing a bit too much for light once the lilies started to multiply, and the air circulation wasn't good enough to keep powdery mildew off of the phlox. Now the daylilies are spaced farther out in front of the lilies and phlox. In the very front, I added new layer of amaryllis with low growers like moonbeam and verbena underneath. The soil here in the Mississippi Delta is known as Mississippi Gumbo Mud, and is unusual enough that engineers from all over come to learn what is involved in building roads and buildings on top of it. It's pretty much pure silt and clay from eons of the Mississippi River flooding. It's about the worst draining stuff you can imagine, but after you rototill in a couple of feet of compost, it's fairly awesome....See MoreHelp liven up kitchen (pics)
Comments (15)Although green is my favorite colour, I do not think it would look good paired with the dark cherry of those cabinets. You need to pull one of the underlying tones out of the cabinet colour for the wall----either a light gold or some warm beige or tan. If you lighten the walls you will see an immediate result. I am also not a fan of a lot of "stuff" on top of cabinets. If you replace some of it I would not use anything small, but well-placed larger baskets or items you already have. I assume you will replace the PO's dark rug? How about either a light coir/seagrass/jute rug bound in an accent colour of green? Or, frankly, I would use nothing, as I don't care for rugs under tables---it's not really sanitary and can look busy. Last question: is the tile in your kitchen actually pink, or does it just appear that way in the photo? If that is the real colour, I would change that along with the wall colour, immediately. If you don't want to dig up the tile before you remodel that is understandable, for for the short term (even a few years) I would have a professional etch and paint the tile. There is no way I could live with that flesh colour for any length of time....See MoreNeed help with chandelier in two story foyer please!
Comments (12)Sorry, I have to disagree with the others and say it's definitely permissible to hang the chandelier where you propose. No one is going to see the chain through the window, and the light should be down where the people are so it can give light to them. Well, I love two-story chandeliers and I LOVE palladian windows more than I can say. And I love big Williamsburg brass chandeliers. I have all three in this house, LOL, and my chandelier is hanging with the tip of its bottom about 8.5' off the floor. The chain is not visible through the window. Two decorators and a very smart lighting store owner have told me this is permissible, so I'm sticking with it. You mention getting a small fixture. How small? You want to make sure it's not too tiny for the space it will be filling. Now that would be bad! LOL. Light store lady and decorator #1 once told me the formula for size vs. space, but I do not remember, sorry....See MoreHow to liven up asparagus?
Comments (34)Cream of asparagus soup. I have never made it but it but have had it when other's have made it. I cook asparagus in a saute pan with just a bit of water and serve it with butter and lemon. Asparagus is my favourite vegetable but I rarely eat it any more because it causes my uric acid levels to rise and I end up getting gout in my ankle and knee soon after I eat it. This spring though, despite the pain I am going to cook myself some locally grown asparagus....See Moreeverdebz
