Let's liven things up!
Comments (30)You want unfair? My wife and I were fortunate (or was that unfortunate?) enough to walk Roris Iris Garden in it's last year of business. It was the peak of bloom season in the Sacramento valley (California) and they were having a "restructuring" sale. Uhhh! We came home with 25 irises, many of which you couldn't find in a catalog at the time. We were looking forward to going back the following year, only to find out that their Japanese founders had pulled the plug completely and went back to focusing on their Japanese growing grounds. Disheartening to say the least... I make a point of not roaming hybridizer's growing grounds any more. It's just to tempting! Dan...See MoreHere, I'll liven things up a little!
Comments (4)I'd suggest you search the archives of the Landscape Design forum for threads regarding home use design software - this discussion comes up frequently. The consensus is that 95% of it is worthless, with some that offer photographic modeling possibly helpful but with a generally deceptive appearance in the result produced. Even professional designers disagree on the value of design software, with many preferring hand drafting and rendering but those who use it lean heavily toward the very expensive, high learning curve CAD programs. Landscape software is a tool, much like paper and pencil is to a designer or spade and pruning shears to a gardener. Unless you have the skills and knowledge to use the tool, it's not going to be very helpful. 5 acres is a lot to organize and plan for - it could be intimidating to even very experienced gardeners to immediately get their hands around such a large chunk of land with widely varying growing conditions. There are a number of very well written home landscape design books that can help provide direction. Most will take you through a step by step process in how to evaluate your property and define your needs for it. They will also explain basic landscape design principles and how you can incorporate them to give your garden structure, flow and unity. This may seem a little esoteric to begin with but hang in there - there are very valid reasons why designers and these home landscaping texts refer to these principles and use them in developing a design. One that I'd recommend highly for the layperson homeowner is Better Homes and Gardens "New Complete Guide to Landscaping", typically available at the book/magazine area of Lowes or HD as well as various book stores and retail garden centers. I refer to this text in my landscape design classes and most homeowners have found it very useful and easy to follow and understand. Invest a few bucks in a good design text book and a camera and get hold of some gridded drafting paper and pencils and start making some plans. For a 3 dimensional effect you can always do tracing paper overlays of existing photos (digital or not), adding plants and features to see how they fit in the scale of things. It's not as difficult as you might imagine and the act of drawing out scale plans with mature sizes of plants carefully delineated will give you a much better sense of impact of the garden over time than inevitably deficient home design software will provide....See Morehow to liven up this kitchen
Comments (3)Not sure why your hood is floating above your backsplash, but I would get that lowered. You can purchase additional cover for the vent pipe Add some framed botanicals to the eating area. Comments (22)No shutters. For sure you have to paint those bricks w/that peacock color! the brick pink/mauve next to that bold teal looks horrible! (I like the peacock, just not the brick color with it!) see below regarding liming the brick) if you want to keep the brick, pick a diff siding color) what you could do for that peak area is run the upper portion of siding in a diff direction. or do board and batten like they've done here. Above the windows, do the board and batten (shown here on the lower portion) (actually, this darker navy might look better w/your brick color) see? better than that peacock color. (if you want to keep the brick, you'll have to choose a siding that works with it, not against it) or even this very dark charcoal siding color/garage door in black, looks good w/this brick tone. see how they did batten pieces here? or, you could even do these shake/shingles on the upper part. another idea I don't know about the white door/brick w/this color. trim is ok, but I think going darker on the garage and on the brick would look better. I also gave you some cedar posts (what you currently have isn't doing anything good) and a wood door. the wood and this color blue are natural compliments to each other. of course your landscaping will play a huge role in bringing it together. I just want to show you how nice these darker graphite colors look w/the turquoise blue shade. and the wood accents too. similar house done in darker colors, including the brick painting your brick. use a good masonry paint like Romabio. you could limewash, or go for the heavier coverage w/the masonry This was used (you can tint this any color) (this has virtually no upkeep and lets the brick breathe) on this brick (which used to be standard red brick) you can read this link to see others https://www.paintedbykaylapayne.com/painted-brick-exterior/...See MoreAdella Bedella
