Paint colour help for new small apartment, part 1
Comments (20)Desk -- hum. It's really a long wood table. Nice wood top, but no detailing. A small filing cabinet fits under it for storage. I'd take a photo, but you'd be horrified -- it's a holy mess right now. I translate part-time and do computer-based volunteer work, so I spend a lot of time at the desk. That's why I've placed it in front of the window. There will be shelves above the right side of it (against the wall). The chair is the cheapest of the Ektorp line and not all that comfy; it's really a guest/cat chair. I read on the sofa with cat company (and in bed). There is another entrance to the kitchen off the hallway. It's here to the right But I'll have a pretty white storage bench there, with display shelves above it. It's the only way I can fit in a place to sit on near the entrance door. That ugly square wall scone, by the way, is being replaced! Your idea of blocking off the living-room entrance to the kitchen was the first thing I thought of when I saw the apartment, but I gave it up as being impractical for me and settled on a much-need bookcase that would at least hide the side of the fridge. Mirrors -- yes, I've got an eye on those. I don't have any, but I realize that in that room anything that reflects will be a good thing; they're on the ever growing list of things to get. I'm very happy with the view. The apartment is on the third floor; what you see in front of the windows is a very large school yard, with the school at the far end -- a whole street block away. And there's trees! Paintings, including the blue clouds: my first husband was (and still is) and artist. The paintings are all his. I didn't like the parquet floors when I first saw them. They've since been sanded and re-varnished. They're now several shades lighter and look much, much better. So ... wall colours for this room?...See MoreI have 1 1/2 acres to landscape with trees and shrubs help!
Comments (14)+Sit back, relax, buy some books and start talking about what you want your garden to do for you. Are you a Vegetable gardener, want a swimming pool, orchard, wildflower meadow.. There is a great book called The American Meadow by John Greenlee. I could see developing Swaths of larger grasses combined with dark green sedges and wildflowers. I garden on 17 acres and it is TOTALLY different than gardening a lot.. Most of it , I have left wild and I manage the wildness. I have developed view lines from where I spend most of my time. I play with dimension and emphasize the stages. I create separate rooms in my mind. barriers are for piercing but create great privacy. The farther away, the larger the planting. small details are for by the house, pathways or where you spend time. I'd take it a bit at a time. I have been working on my cactus garden last year. This year I am working on a stone wall , but I am starting a bunch of wild grasses for plugs for next years project. You need to ask are you going to mow this place or are you going to get grasses that need no mowing OR WATERING. When one works on a large garden, one always has to think of how one will do this and keep it. Mowed areas must be defined apart from un-mowed areas. I go for the wild look and I love my short grass prairie grasses. I am lazy. I don't own a mower. Is there a HOA with expectations? My type of garden really pisses them off. There is so much to think about with an blank slate like this. Keep it this way for a year and see what comes up and do your research. Maybe there are some surprises under that dirt....See MoreFirst Apartment Living Room HELP!!!
Comments (14)So far you seem to be concentrating on cool colors and neutrals, and on cloudy/rainy/snowy days your apartment will seem rather cheerless. Introduce some warms colors, yellow and terracotta, for instance, with pillows and art. Find some very large abstract prints that have warm and cool colors both. The more wall space you can fill up with art that you love the more furnished your apartment will look even when you don't yet have all your furniture. Also, consider tribal rugs like Gabbeh (check esalerugs.com) instead of modern rugs for a more cozy and eclectic feel. You can return these rugs without charge, and you'll be able to pick pillows and other accessories using the colors taken from the rug. Make sure the rug is as large as you can afford because a larger rug will make your living area look larger and more "furnished". Don't forget books, plants and of course art to make your new home look stylish and warm. Try not to use blues and grays too much; that will just make your rooms look cold and forbidding....See MoreI need help with my small 1 bedroom apartment
Comments (12)@madden, slick & bontempo - thank you for drawing out the floor plan as you would - I’ll have to figure out a screen for the fridge and see if that works or if the island is enough for separation. I’m stuck with an older couch now but love the behind the couch small table. I currently have a small glass one. The tv is going to be mounted and I wasn’t planning on having anything below it. The bedroom is confusing because I have two dressers I need to figure out placement for - one is a light brown 6 drawer set the other is dark brown linen so that doesn’t go well along with my computer desk. Storage is hard since the closet is very limited with space. I love the island. I’ll need to get that first because the one there is currently a high top with two stools and a large triangle almost touching ceiling so it takes away from space...See MoreRelated Professionals
