Currently, everything is gray and black. NYC has long winters, which can be depressing, and dark colors in a small space won't help. I would suggest a colorful rug, two pillows for the couch (w colors from the rug) and a plant or two on the window ledge (to add some life).

A glass or acrylic coffee table will help keep the space visually clear. Or, consider one w storage, which you will definitely need more of.

There are a lot of websites w tips for decorating a small NYC apartment on a budget.

It's a one bedroom. I will be posting pictures once this stuff is moved in to try to go from there on Monday/Tuesday.

Will absolutely be adding throw pillows/a throw blanket. Was thinking of that rug with blue accent pillows and I have a teal throw blanket from West Elm that I adore.

Yes, blue is complementary to gray/black. The rug just looked like shades of gray to me. Could be my monitor.

It's way more blue in the Ikea pics. That will look good with your blue and teal accents!

My daughter lives in NYC, also in a small apt, and storage is always an issue. There is no coat closet, linen closet or separate pantry. Think over the door racks, command hooks, a bookcase, under the bed storage, space saving closet hangers...

Since the space is small, I would suggest a round dining table. Add some white or silver accents in to brighten up the dark colors too. Be sure to tie your color scheme in with your kitchen too. All it takes is some decorative containers, dish towels, salt & paper shakers that are blue/teal.

Don't forget to decorate those walls. You could paint your own large abstract canvas in your colors. Sprinkle the color accents through the room, but be careful not to go overboard, either. Remember they are "accents". Congrats & have fun!

We have a large closet in the hallway, a giant linen closet in the bathroom and a closet in the bedroom. I still don't think it will be enough. Haha. Have to love New York! The TV stand will double as storage and I picked up these awesome ikea under the bed boxes that will fit perfectly.

Thanks Lisa! I love that teal chair!! I would love to have a rectangular table, but it's all depending once we move in and see how much space we have. I'm definitely not opposed to round as long as it looks nice.

Really, have fun with it! Don't worry about messing up. I know things cost money, but nothing is permanent. If you really don't like something, you can probably return it.

So far you seem to be concentrating on cool colors and neutrals, and on cloudy/rainy/snowy days your apartment will seem rather cheerless. Introduce some warms colors, yellow and terracotta, for instance, with pillows and art. Find some very large abstract prints that have warm and cool colors both. The more wall space you can fill up with art that you love the more furnished your apartment will look even when you don't yet have all your furniture. Also, consider tribal rugs like Gabbeh (check esalerugs.com) instead of modern rugs for a more cozy and eclectic feel. You can return these rugs without charge, and you'll be able to pick pillows and other accessories using the colors taken from the rug. Make sure the rug is as large as you can afford because a larger rug will make your living area look larger and more "furnished". Don't forget books, plants and of course art to make your new home look stylish and warm. Try not to use blues and grays too much; that will just make your rooms look cold and forbidding.

I agree with Lil S too in regards to Command hooks and picture hanging. I use Command picture hanging for nearly everything on my walls. And Command hooks inside closets (belts, scarves, etc), inside kitchen cabinets (to hide the dish cleaning scrubby brush), medicine cabinets... anywhere I can discreetly hang things to avoid clutter. Magnetic strips inside your drawer or medicine cabinet helps corral small items like tweezers, bobby pins, safety pins.. I could go on, but you get the idea. :D

While the rug you currently have isn't horrible, it doesn't seem to do your new apartment any favors. We recommend looking around for something a bit lighter and with more colors in it. Try something that will be light on the floor as well. We also recommend working in some accessories that will go with the rug you choose.

Might want to rethink the coffee table with reclining sofa.....ours seemed to always be in the way, so we used end tables on each end of the couch. Have fun with your decorating.
