A day of hacking notices

Received a notice from Twitter saying my account might be compromised. I rarely use Twitter and mostly read some of the people I follow. I was advised to change my password which I did.

Now I receive a notice from Evernote (which I never heard of) that they were hacked and I should change my password.

I Googled Evernote to find out what it is and how I would have a account with them. Apparently it is a note taking app. I do not have it nor ever did.

I was trying to figure out whether this was legitimate.

I have a Iphone and a Windows computer. I do not see anything listed on my program list on computer as, Evernote.

Is it possible this app or program is on my computer and doesn't show up as a single entity. Maybe part of Office or something else?

My phone is Apple and there is nothing listed on the phone by that name.

I'm thinking I shouldn't change my password, since I do not have one. Never heard of this program.

Anyone else get this notice?

This is the third time Twitter has locked my account over the past year.

That seems very odd. When you reset your password, are you using a "hard" password? I don't know if Twitter has them but if they do, have you changed any account recovery questions?

I might suggest contacting Twitter and asking them why this is happening.

I'm wondering if these notices aren't phishing schemes. I'm hoping that when you go to change you password, that you are not following any links in the email but rather entering the site's address directly into your browser.

Twitter, I tried to open the app and got the message. I changed it there. Evernote, since I don't know what it is, I'm doing nothing.

Beach - are you ribbing Jeff about the good ol' days of the Jade-gone-wild he enjoyed in his yard? (That wall-o-Jade was in your yard, wasn't it Jeff?) You southern folk got it so good! Jeff, your Jade looks like it's on its way to being a bushy fella. I've been known to whack them until there are nothing but leafless branches. Had one (of the sports) that got beat up in a bad wind/hail storm in June 2008. After two months, it looked like this... By this last May, it had filled in nicely... I don't have a current photo, but it's looking pretty great! I love the way the trunk thickens with each serious pruning. I have two big standard Jades that are in dire need of a serious pruning that I plan to whack at as soon as they're done flowering. And I agree with Josh - I'm a little nervous (even after all the pruning I've done) the first few cuts, but it does get easier. Wow, I just read your story. That is TERRIBLE! I agree with everyone else -- you are being discriminated against and I think it is worth suing them. But you have to weigh the emotional and time costs of suing. If you have the time and you think it will help protect someone else in the future as well as provide some closure to you, then do it. If not -- if it will only add to your stress -- and you think you can let it go, then move on to your next apartment and enjoy your life. I will tell you that we almost moved into an apartment in which this could have been us. We needed to find a bigger apartment because we were planning to have a baby. We found one that we thought we liked, though it was a bit expensive for us. We negotiated the rent down a bit and signed the lease. That night I had a panic attack about it because the owner of the apartment, who lived below this apartment, had gone on and on about the previous tenant who had a child that cried a lot. He said something about not knowing our plans but assumed we wouldn't be the same kind of tenants. It worried me because babies cry. You have no idea what your child's temperment is going to be like and I realized that if we were lucky enough to get pregnant and have a baby, this guy and his wife could potentially make our lives miserable (including but not limited to increasing our rent significantly). The next day we backed out of the lease (at great expense to us). Several months later, we found an even better apartment (and I was pregnant by then) that was less expensive. The landlord is a peach. I have asked him numerous times whether my son's crying or his toddling (or his periodic sippy cup drops from his high chair) bothers him or his brother. He always responds by saying things like "babies cry" or "I hope we aren't too loud for you!" It is SO nice to be in a space where you can just live your lives and not have to worry all of the time. We are all respectful of one another as well as understanding. It makes such a difference! I hope this new apartment will provide you with the same kind of safe-haven we have found with our apartment. You deserve it! But, just in case you find that someone complains about noise in your new place, you can always try corkboard for the ceiling.... Hang in there! I am sure this nasty woman who has forced this on you will have her day. Her negative energy is bound to come back and bite her in the bum one of these days... Jen

I had this same thing happen with a Munstead Wood rose that had been in the vase for maybe 3 days, I thought the smell was coming from my kitchen trash can, so I completely cleaned and scrubbed it out to no avail, I was so confused! Turns out it was coming from the small bouquet nearby that was a little past it's prime, boy did it smell bad for something that at one time smelled delicious! Live & learn!

Changing passwords periodically is a good idea anyway but remember there's a lot of Chicken Little activity on the internet right now. Even this site sent out some notices, not for any particular reason but just because of the smells in the air. Click on link below and note the comment by Houzz employee Emily H near the bottom

Evernote partners with Twitter... evernote is sort of built into parts of twitters functionality.

You might want to see if you can sign into Evernote with your Twitter login/password.

I'm going to leave Evernote alone. I know I never had a account there. Why bother. I have no trouble getting on twitter.

There are many posts on Twitter with recipes and I do save some to my Iphone (notes). Wondering if that is risky? Never thought about it before and have been doing that on both Twitter and Facebook.

Thinking that saving links from those two places, on my phone could carry risk. I'm sort of at a loss how the phone works as I don't have any protection on it. Not sure if there is anything available for phones.

I'm 99% certain these are phishing schemes. Never click on a link in a message that says your account has been compromised. If you want to be on the safe side, you can go to the web site as you normally do, log in, and change your password. But never click on an email link involving hacked accounts. And, did I mention?: never click on one of those hot links... ;-)

Twitter wasn't. I went to their website and got the message that my account was locked until I changed my password.

The other one, Evernote, I didn't do anything with. I know I never had an account with them. I never heard of it.

This is the third time Twitter has locked my account over the past year. If it happens again, I will no longer use it. Not sure what the problem is but its making me nervous.

A password that isn't "password" or "12345" and is sufficiently long, uses a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. Steve Gibson has an excellent article on passwords and how to make ones that are difficult to crack but easy to remember here.

Twitter has a page on what to do if you suspect your account has been hacked here. And apparently there isn't always a good way to contact Twitter but you can start here.
