Full Remodel Addition of Some Windows and Sliders, Complete ReBuild of Rough Openings

Concerns: Quality & Service of Product

I am getting ready to order over 70 new windows for my project. It's a single family home that will become 3 units - 1 owner's unit and 2 rental units. I have looked at many products and find the WeatherShield Premium Line and Andersen E/Eagle Product to be very similar in fit & finish. Since I am not doing any replacement the fit of the window is not a concern as each window will be installed almost from scratch.

I am wanting to speak with owners/builders who are familiar with each product and specifically the product in my environment. I do not live in an area with extreme temperature swings or heavy moisture. I do not live in the foggiest of neighborhoods - quite the opposite actually.

I see many comments on the WS product that is over 10 years old and not much on the andersen product. I am interested in currently product reliability (last 5-10 years) and experiences. The WS rep is excited about my project and looking to use it for promo material - can I look for any value from rep for this?

Bids I have received for the WS product are very fairly priced and have also fairly priced installation included. Bids for Andersen product are somewhat more expensive - am I buying a name? or what real world experience and service is behind that.

Probably a bigger issue of if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. My experiences are limited, but there are two very different opinions on this forum from folks that do and have used them. One is from a bit older (actually he is much, much older....angry and embittered.....Ha! Just kidding) and the other is from someone that has a bit more current experience with them but without the history.

I was an AW service tech for 16 years, but have been out for 2.5 years. I seem to remember that art glass itself had essentially no warranty after delivery due to its nature & fragility. But when they started offering the art glass inside the airspace of insulated glass, I believe that had a warranty against seal failure or other manufacturing defects for ten years. Like I said, though-I've been out for a while so I looked it up. According to the warranty listed at this link, it is indeed a ten year warranty against seal failure. I know this is an old thread. If anyone is still reading, I'm looking for advice on replacing our windows and sliding glass doors at our beach house. We have 8 casement windows and 3 sliding doors. We were going to go with vinyl new construction windows and doors until we started hearing negative information about the durability of vinyl. We are doing this once so want to do it right. The sliders also face south and get hot afternoon sun. Also we are undecided between white or black exterior trim (white inside) but that's a whole other decision to make! We will be visiting both Pella and Andersen this week. We are looking at possibly the Pella Impervia fiberglass line, or the Andersen 100 Series Fibrex. We need to make a decision quickly to get the product ordered. This will be done in tandem with a deck replacement and siding replacement with Certainteed vinyl white board and batten. Any advice and recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!

Grande - I'm not promoting Pella at all I'm just offering my opinion as someone who has used them and from contractors I've spoken to. To say they are garbage is contrary to what I have experienced and heard, of course there are better windows and there are also personal preferences involved. However I would bet that you are a window salesman and your comments should have that disclosure so people can understand what your motive is. Comparing JW to Pella is laughable...just look at the comments on this thread. I also steer clear of anyone stating something as fact...with no eveidence to support their "facts". "Anyone in windows knows this, it's a fact" is a very adolescent type comment. If you don't like Pella fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but try to state reasons other than obscure comments packed with innuendos. I am not saying Pella are the best windows, I'm saying they are decent and in my opinion I would use them over JW just from a support perspective. I don't know the other windows you suggested but I did say there are many local manufacturers that offer good alternatives...perhaps those are but I personally don't know.

cmon millworkman.. you shouldnt just spew stuff you arent very informed about. Especially if you want to sound like an independent professional. They have not went bankrupt and I will keep this discussion short.. show me and the other folks on the board the source to that statement. SNE was their vinyl line and they laid off those employees and moved operations.. they are getting out of vinyl and fiberglass hence Beechworth which is standard business moves. Focusing on a few product lines to play in the high end market of wood clad products. Bankruptcy, Dropping names, and changing brands no way. They did acquire Peachtree and dissolved it but I dont think acquiring companies is the same as what you are saying Since you love Loewen so much maybe you should mention that about them they got crushed after the 2008 bubble too before getting the company back .. you can read about that here http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/business/loewen-window-firm-all-in-the-family-again-214109231.html

My opinon would be to keep looking, and it is possible I may be the angry and embittered person he is refering to. I owuld have answered with the exact same response last week but apparently I missed this question..................
