Need help figuring out how to hire someone to replace siding

We have aluminum siding that is very chalky. I can't tell if we need to replace it or if we can just paint it. There are dents that need to be fixed and a few corner pieces that are missing. I don't know what to look for in a contractor or what kind of contractor to contact. Help please!

It can be painted. Ask around for a trustworthy painter and get an estimate. The painter will not who can do repairs.

You really don't "fix" dents in aluminum siding and the chances of matching a few corner pcs is tough. Were it me and the siding is as bad as you state, I would think about replacing rather than spending probably 50% of the replacement cost on a temporary finish. Google siding contractors in your zip code or find a local REAL lumberyard (not a box store).

Thank you everyone for your advice! I looked up osmocote and it does look similar to what I remember. I don't think it was osmocote exactly though. Maybe I'm focusing too much on fertizlizer. It's easier to believe that the only problem is fertilizer, but maybe it's something else. Also, I agree that this would be 1,000 times easier if I knew what the plants were, but I don't! I never had a chance to ask the rental service before the office closed. I'm going to put some more effort into finding out exactly what they are. Someone above mentioned plant books, so I think that is where I'll start. So whats some general advice for dying houseplants? It seems like I should lay off of watering for a little bit, to make sure I'm not overdoing it. This might be the problem actually. I have the same pots that the plants were in, in the office and the way it's set up theres a smaller pot inside a bigger one. The rental service always filled the second one with water, and then the plants would just soak up what they needed. Maybe this isn't the best approach? Maybe theres TOO much water around them. I'm certain the service just did this so they wouldn't have to visit the office too often. Come to think of it, the one plant I have from the office that isn't in a set up like this is doing fine. So maybe I'll change this. Also, there was one plant that was doing fine, but started wilting recently, I think because I gave it miracle grow. How do I help it recover? Does it just take time? Also, thank you again to everyone offering advice. I'm really new at this and you've all been very patient with my newbie questions!

I'm worried that you're even giving him an opportunity to respond ... just be sure neither of you BUYS whatever he comes up with as an excuse (for the delays, the absence of communication, lack of professionalism and integrity in selling your cabinets without discussing that option with you and BEFORE even beginning work on your job, and the utterly unacceptable and unprofessional nature of his email response to you about them). Even if there were a genuine miscommunication about the cabinets and the bid figure (which I don't think there was!), the rest (delays, attitude, etc.) should be sufficient RED FLAGS to cut ties with this guy. There is no response he could possibly make at this point that ought to lift those flags from your mind... or your husband's. And you ought NOT move forward with those flags flying!! So just don't be tempted to!!

I would not add anything that sticks out much into the walkway on that long wall...people's shoulders will whack them going by! And at the risk of horrifying everyone, I see no reason why you shouldn't paint the three walls of your kitchen a different shade from everything else, if you want to. A warm gold-toned tan would give a good backdrop to the things you want to use, and make the kitchen into a space of its own. I would also pull the ledge off the pass-through and add a generous countertop supported by big iron brackets on the family room side where your family and friends could sit while you are in the kitchen, and that you could use as a serving surface or bar. That would solve your no-table problem in a simple way. Since you don't have a window, your big wall is the ideal place for a really big mirror, the size of an actual window, which you could then surround with four prints that suit your style. I agree that you shouldn't clutter things up...you don't have the luxury of a lot of counter space, so you will need to keep your counters pretty clear of things that are only decorative. You can put something nice in the corners, though...Ballard has a group of white urns that are purely decorative, but you might do well at antique shops and fleas, too, and find things you can actually use (these are purely decorative). And I would hang that wonderful plaque on the larger wall over your fridge, so you can get it up higher and see it from the family room. Here is a link that might be useful: Ballard urns

I think a door like this would look better as opposed to just painting it brown I gave you two different address/light combos. what if you did some other brown trim around the windows like they've done here? here's a light tan one like yours, with some added carriage hardware. At the very least, I'd get some iron carriage hardware and add those to the white door. It may be enough interest. then add the lights, the address, and the landscaping. If you still need something, then consider a wood or wood look garage door. maybe something spanish style. w/other spanish elements. like the flagstone darker brown, more modern style deep brown w/window inserts. landscaping will make or break the look. if you can do a xeriscape, it will fit w/the style for this porch area, I'd seriously consider doing some type of tile. something w/a bit of color or pattern. a talavera or mexican/spanish type of tile maybe? or even a cement or porcelain you could even to a skim coat of cement to smooth it out, and then paint on a design w/a stencil

Check Angies List, facebook and BBB website on local contractors. It is tough to find someone. See if your contractor will provide a free estimate before you sign anything, in case you need the siding replaced.

Get references of work recently completed. Get phone numbers and call and see if they are satisfied with work done. If contractors are good, they usually are busy and word of mouth is their best advertising. If they are good, you may have to wait a while, but it will be worth it if highly recommended.

I painted my aluminum siding 15 years ago -- it needs to be repainted now, having lasted longer than I expected. It was warrantied for only 10 years.

Are the dents very visible, or just minor and not really noticeable to a casual observer?

The corner pieces might be replaceable without too much trouble -- my roofer damaged a bit of my aluminum siding trim and was able to replace it.

Most siding contractors will want to sell you new siding, so you might look for someone more like a home repair/maintenance firm -- if you decide that the dents aren't that bad.
