Pre-emergent and Fertilizer application before rain

Hi,

I was going to apply Milorganite at .5 lb N/1000 sq feet on Labor day or just before that and apply the pre-emergent (0-0-7 Dimension Sunniland) on Sept 8th. As we are expecting some rains over the weekend, it it too early to apply pre-emergent like today for a bermuda-lawn? I will do another pre-emergent application in Dec per Sunniland's application rate.

Are you going to be seeding anything? If not, put the pre-emergent down. Poa A is already germinating.

No seeding, just focusing on getting into on a good pre-emergent schedule and fertilize as needed for a bermuda lawn. Thanks for the info! I will be putting it down today with my last fertilizer application for the year.

Atrazine is used as a post emergent- when weeds are actively growing. A pre emergent is used to stop weed seeds from sprouting. A pre emergent can be very effective when applied in the Fall and again in the Spring. Night time temperatures of 50 to 55 start weed seed germination which means don't count on web site advice. Time applications by actual temperatures on your own property. Results can be slow to show but after two years you will notice a big difference. I have read to put it down when the crocus bloom. I'm in zone 5 and my perennials are all starting to come up already. Not sure about annual weeds, but I think the window is fast closing on putting down pre-emergent unless you are quite a bit further north than we are. We use corn gluten meal, and while the jury is still out on its effectiveness, we already put it down a week or two ago.

I use a pre-emergent without nitrogen and look for what's available at my local stores. Southern States had a granular product with Dimension (0-0-7) and I got that. I used something similar last year, but I may have gotten it from Home Depot then. If you plan to overseed in the fall, be sure to read instructions on how soon after using the pre-emergent you can reseed. That may affect which one you choose.

Solve the equation by selecting your "m" and it will result in the dosage amount per gallon which would cover 1000sqft. This is a common misconception. The amount of carrier (water) per ksf is a function of the sprayer volume, not a pre-determined thing, which is why spraying requires calibration. What you do is you mark a 10x10 section of driveway , take your sprayer and a timer, and see how long it takes you to spray that 100 sq ft section. You then take a large measuring cup and spray into it for the same amount of time to see how much water it used for 100 sq ft. Multiply that by ten and now you know how much water to use per thousand sq feet. My backpack sprayer with the fan nozzle puts out 1.3 gallons per ksf. The round spray nozzle puts out 0.7 gallons per ksf, but can be adjusted. If I'm trying to apply prodiamine to 3000 sq ft with the fan spray at a rate of 0.5oz per ksf, I would add 3.9 gallons of water to the sprayer and 1.5oz of prodiamine. If I'm going to do it with the round spray nozzle I would add 2.1 gallons of water and 1.5 oz of prodiamine. The amount of water will vary based on nozzle output and calibration. Calibration has to be done every time to ensure correct application.

pre-emergent will wash out of the effective zone if you get too much rain.

Is this too much rain?Tonight - less than tenth of inch of rain
Tomorrow - Rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Fri - Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Sat - 50% change of precip.

If you get what we are getting here in north georgia it will be fine..We are getting a very slow rain that started around 2 pm and still going as of 8:30 pm EST.I havent seen this slow of a rain in a while..Seems all we get here is heavy down pours..This rain is perfect as we have been very dry without rain going on 14 days here.

I was able to put down the pre-emergent but however messed up over a small section where I was supposed to apply 1/2 lb but applied 1.5 lb:(. Will it burn the grass? I had the numbers written for fertilization as well and applied that instead. Anyway here is a picture of what it looks inside. This is my first time applying pre-emergent but is it normal to look like this? It almost felt here and there like small sharp stones. I am just concerned whether I got a bad bag.

That's what my dimension usually looks like. I think barricade & others may have a different look, more like fertilizer. Your spot that got too much may be a slow grower until next year, but it shouldn't kill it.

I didnt think a pre emergent would affect grasses/bermuda?only the seeds?

Generally preM is a root & shoot inhibitor so the stolons that Bermuda uses to spread are sometimes stunted. Dimension is definitely known to affect more than seeds, it even kills crabgrass up to 1 tiller in size
