This is a very old thread, but I'll comment because I'm trying to figure out why hummingbirds prefer old nectar over new. I suspect the OP's fresh good was competing with someone else's older food nearby, and the hummers prefered the older food. I have identical feeders, and my Anna's will ignore the freshly filled one in favor of the older one until the old one is empty, then they'll do the same when I refill it- ignoring it until the older one is dry. The behavior is clear and obvious, and seems to be something they can smell. I suspect they are attracted to the odor of a tiny bit of alcohol in the older food, but maybe something else. They fly up, hover a second, and go to the oldest one. I switch the feeders around and try all sorts of tricks, but they know which has older food, and that is definitely their preference.  I'm in the cool PNW, and my feeders are used up in a week, so it won't be much alcohol. Behavior might be reversed if the nectar ever got very old. I might test that this summer.

I have sort of the same issue.. I have wooden blinds with stationary drapery panels to either side. I love the blinds for their function, but something is missing. What I am considering is placing those bamboo woven roman shades OVER my blinds (in your case, the cellular shades), and leaving my drapes to each side. That would finish my look off, and would bring some nice texture in for you. The roman shades would be are just for looks and won't be pulled up and down, so they would be hung so the cellulars are hidden under the romans when the cellulars are pulled up. I can't tell if your cellulars are inside or outside mounted. If they are outside like my blinds, you are going to have to put a 2x4 or something behind the romans before you put them up so that the romans stand proud of the cellulars. Additionally, the drapes may also need to come forward in order to clear both.. I am considering buying a double curtain rod and using just the front rod, OR using those plant hook brackets. I've used them as drapery rod holders before when I lived in an apartment, and they worked quite well. Actually, I used a spray painted length of iron pipe as the actual drapery rod. Can you tell I had a tiny budget then? :) This was kind of long, hope it makes sense!

Low-e will block the vast majority of the UV spectrum...but keep in mind, UV isn't the only thing that fads finishes. Visible light fades finishes as well. So, if your goal is to protect them as much as possible, you are going to still have to deploy the shades.

I have both 1% and 5% white solar shades in my house. 1% in bedrooms for privacy and light control. 5% in living room to preserve some of the view and to reduce heat gain. It's a neat concept to be able to see the view through the 5% shade, but as soon as the sun is no longer an issue, which is much of the time (overcast days, trees leafed out and anytime after mid-day), I roll the shades up, because that's the view I really want to see. The sun shines through the 5% shade so much so that it hurts my eyes, so I have to position myself somewhere in the room where it is not an issue. I'm not sure how different black would be, but I've noticed that a lot of restaurants have black. I considered black, but I sort of prefer light and bright. I'm not sorry I ordered white, the view may be blurry, but the mind fills in the blanks, if that makes sense. I ordered mine from blind.com.
