Comments (72)nancy_east -- thanks for your nice words! How exciting about your kitchen -- this will be fun to watch develop! The widest walkway we have is 36 1/2" (countertop to countertop), with it going down to 34 1/2" where our apron front sink "jumps" out. From our cooktop to the widest point of the bowed island countertop is 35 3/4". The only times (or rather, areas) our aisles feel tight are when the dishwasher door is open and there's only 12" of clearance (between the open door and the island cabinetry). But so far, no barked shins! We're careful and aware. The other area is our refrigerator (which is 30" wide, all refrigerator so it's a wide door): when it's open the only one who can sidle by (and then it's just barely) is our two year-old. But neither of those conditions are permanent (meaning, the dishwasher is mostly closed and the refrigerator door is mostly closed as well). While 36" for an aisle isn't "ideal," for us it's working out fine. Our only alternative would've been to give up the island and that wasn't an option! We need the storage space. Your aisles will work out fine; if it there's an impediment in the 36" aisle (like a dishwasher), then you all will learn the same careful two-step we and many others have as well! Good luck with your kitchen-in-progress! (and whole house, too!)...See MoreLooking for windows with black interior and black exterior
Comments (162)We were also wanting windows with black interiors and exteriors. For us the local availability brought it down to a choice between Pella or Milgard fiberglass windows. The Pella offerings were somewhat pricier, and we could never quite understand the why of it. We wound up selecting Milgard Ultra, and we're happy with the end results. And Milgard's warranty was fantastic, as our landscaper accidentally hit one window with a stone and chipped it, but Milgard replaced the insert without so much as a blink. One factor is whether a particular manufacturer's black is acceptable to you. Milgard's is called Black Bean, which is a bit lighter than true black, and I fussed over this for quite a while. Pella's may have been very slightly blacker, but also not true black. Now that we can see the final product in place, it looks fine. Good luck on your project. Brian...See MoreWhite or black windows?
Comments (19)I like the second pic -- but without the shutters. Like the stone around the garage doors. I generally prefer the black window frames -- and lots of windows without any shutters. If, however, you're going to frame the black windows with white boards (rather than choosing a lighter or darker shade of your exterior wall color to add framing/trim around your windows), white window and door frames and white fascia will look much better -- more classic. Do take into consideration your entry door when deciding on the color/finish of your garage doors and frame. You don't want your garage competing with your entry door for attention. Like the dark garage doors within the stone with the dark entry door. If you're going w/a dark wood and glass entry, using the same on your garage with as little white framing showing as possible is the way to go. Better yet, choose the black around the garage doors in the stone, not even letting a thin stripe of white show....See MoreHelp with black window trim
