Comments (7)Elaine, your new bathroom is gorgeous. You did a great job picking out materials. I love your SW White Raisin. Of all the many, many paint samples I had splotched on my downstairs, it was my favorite. I didn't choose it because we had so much space to paint and such high ceiling, that I thought it might be too bright. I would just use white towels with your black and white art. With the use of more expensive bathroom materials, lately, I don't think towels have to be used as a decorating statement anymore. Your window area isn't that large but you could use a valnace if you wanted to soften the top. I think that maybe renofan used a shower curtain over a shower door but with the rest of your finishes being nickel, I don't know if I'd bother with that. I know you don't like the looks of it (I have one, also), but yours is tucked away nicely....See MoreHow do you use your hallways?
Comments (10)We have three hallways, and two of them connect to form a sort of double-hall area. The hall near the front door is 4'x9'. One of the long sides has built-ins running the entire length -- a teeny tiny powder room (think airplane size), a coat closet, and a cabinet (two drawers are used as a desk, and the shelves below store table linens). I had lighting installed in the upper portion of the cabinet because the hallway gets very little light. The opposite wall has a console table (with drawer for gloves) and a small lamp. This hall adjoins the center hall, which is 7'x9'. The stairway leads off this area, as well as openings to the kitchen, dining room, and living room. There is space for a small drop-leaf table and two extra dining chairs along the walls. I bring this table and chairs into the dining room for larger dinner parties. There is a hanging light in here, and this area often gets used as a catch-all for my purse, mail, etc. The upstairs' hall is irregularly shaped; there is an open area which measures about 7'x9', and a 3'x6' path near the top of the stairs. There are openings to three bedrooms, a sitting room, bathroom, and two closets. At the top of the steps there is a built-in bookcase where the ceiling slopes down low. In the open area is a built-in cabinet with drawers, which I use for clothing. I have a table lamp on the cabinet, and there is a ceiling light and skylight. All of the hallways are used to display various types of artwork, mirrors, maps, and pottery. Although this house is less than 1500 sq. ft., the configuration of the halls makes the space seem larger and the built-ins help with storage. Comments (32)Hi anele; I totally know what you mean about being a vegan making your social life difficult! I am really impressed that you're a veg in a family of omnivores ... wow. It is not easy! Well, I guess we're "just" the strictest of vegetarians, although I find that my children (two and four year-olds) and I feel and do better when following a vegan diet. (My husband is an omnivore, but only outside the house -- at home, he is also a strict veg. He also finds he doesn't do well after eating ice cream but he eats it anyway!) When the children are out at school or with friends I don't freak out when they get (dairy) cheese pizza or baked goods made with egg, but at home, I try to bake only vegan and we only use soy yogurt and soy milk. (They are always forbidden from drinking dairy milk and eating dairy ice cream / sherbert. Both make them vomit and that's just unfair to their little systems.) I've yet to find a non-dairy cheese which isn't repulsive, so that's a hard one for us .... When we lived in San Francisco (CA) we also found being vegan socially isolating -- even as a vegetarian it was hard. But now we live in Boulder (CO) where being a vegan is socially easier, but when we socialize (outside the house) we're just vegetarian. We'll go with the flow up to a certain point. I have to say it is just so much easier to even be a vegan in this day and age with all the substitute products available to us! But even still, it's work. I really do applaud you for being a veg in your home!...See MoreRedid hallway and need Help accessorizing
Comments (12)Thanks for the compliments on the wallpaper. I was worried I'd get sick of it, but still love it. Unfortunately, we really do need the storage. When we restored the house 5 years ago, we added A/C and to make that work, they repurposed our only linen-type closet to house mechanical stuff. It's hard to tell in the pic, but that area is slightly recessed and, in person, it really seems to need something there. But the most compelling reason to keep it is that I spent approx. 300 billion hours putting the d@amn thing together yesterday....See MoreNancy K
