Kitchen Back splash

I want to put backsplash in my kitchen, but it already has a 6" granite backsplash that came with the house. Would it look akward to do a different backsplash above the granite. Do I need to remove the old backsplash and go from the counter up.

6" is a pretty extensive bs. It is entirely up to you how to proceed, but it would probably look better without the 6" splash.

I would remove it if you plan on using another backsplash like tile. It looks cheap to add tile on top of the granite piece

Here is a link to google, how that backsplash should have been installed. There are some u tube videos too. I watched one video, where they used grout, between the countertop and the backsplash, and grout should not be used there. Caulking shud be done between backsplash and countertop. My backsplash is also caulked in all the corners, rather than grouted. Once you watch these videos and read these articles, you will see that your thinset was put on improperly, and thats why your tiles are falling off. It seems that everything that is visible in the photo you posted is in warm tones except for the cool black/white/gray counter and the stainless refrigerator. So much else would have to change to make the counter work, not just the backsplash: furniture, wall color, floor, railings, artwork). It looks like the kitchen is open to the other spaces, so just changing backsplash and wall color might not be enough.

If/when you remove the backsplash...try to get it off in one piece. Some people have discovered gaps between the counter and wall that tile thickness does not cover. If there is a really large gap, a solution is to cut down the height of the backsplash as far as a fabricator can, put the short-height granite splash back and then tile. Several GW member have posted the results, and they looked fine.

Gaps absolutely can be an issue. Know what else is an issue? Not having an idea of what you want it to look like in the end. A google image search of kitchens with your cabinet color and counters can show you what others have chosen in similar circumstances. It can be very useful having inspiration images.
