Kitchen Back-splash - Glass tiles FALLING OFF

We recently had glass tile installed for our back-splash in our condo

kitchen (4 x 16 glass tiles), using standard thin set from Home Depot for glass. About a week later, several tiles started falling off. The thin set remained on the dry wall, not on the tiles. The installer really took his time matching/leveling the wall before hand. He installed them 1/32 space.
We are trying to figure out if this is an installation problem or a thin set problem and should we expect them all to fall in the near future? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Multiple issues. Spot set is the completely wrong methodology. Backbuttering to a minimum of 85% coverage is required, as well as troweling the wall. No blobs, leaving voids. It also likely skinned over because of too much time and wasn’t fresh enough to offer a bond. “HD thinset” doesn’t say much about brand and proper adhesive qualities.

Plus there is no grout to lock the installation together, as is required. A total $500 craigslist hack job. And he doesn’t have the skills to do it right in the first place. Move on and hire an actual Pro. The way the tile is coming off, you might even be able to salvage it. But, the rest of the demo is only going to add to the eventual real world costs for doing a backsplash with a Pro.

Thank you for your feedback. Attached is photo of the thinset. We were trying to decide between Clear/diamond grout or similar grout color to the glass tile, hence the delay in the grout install. Should we try to take all tiles off. Or about how long should we wait to see if anymore fall off? Thank you again Sophie.

I think it partially depends on whether you want the backsplash to look "framed". That's essentially what the porcelain tile will do because it is visually different from the glass tile. Bullnose tends to be more expensive than field tiles, and you will (almost definitely) have some scraps left over from doing the shower. I would consider cutting some of those scraps into the strip shape (as you would the bullnose) and taping it up as a layout to see if you like that framed look. If you do, then go ahead and cut the bullnose and tape that up. This would hopefully save you some money if it turns out you do not like the look of the frame around the glass tile. My personal preference would be to not do the bullnose around the glass tile. To me the mosaic is very pretty and has a lovely rounded edge and I would not want anything to take away the focus from the glass tiles. However, this is just my opinion, so feel free to ignore it.

Glass blocks are tricky. In a modern, clean-lined kitchen I think it might work, if done just right. But if you have traditional tastes, it would likely come off looking like you did your kitchen 25 years ago.

oh mayflowers forgot to say that I like the idea of adding cabinets to back of peninsula area but was also thinking of having two backless bar stools with black leather seats there as well. Will have to think about the wainscoating and now that I look closely the area could use an update and it is scuffed up. the more we look the more we see that needs help with this house Ugh thanks so much Here is the living room, my carpenter is fashioning a pine wood free floating mantle as we speak, it will have oil on it and natural tones. We have sofa facing the fireplace that's a thin cordoroy material in a light blue/green and plan to have an accent chair against the other wall (the staircase wall) with perhaps some type of server or china cabinet over there, dining area is too small for china cabinet but might be able to have a behind the sofa credenza (for more storage) we also plan to have an area rug in front of the sofa. I am looking for a gray one with texture if I can find one. what do you think of those ideas? Right now the dining area has a work table we're using till we find what we want lol

I am looking for the same. New white kitchen in a home built in 1928- my adjacent dining room is also a green. We have wood floors and will have some stainless. I am still trying to figure out countertops and backsplash- designer and architect like white subway. There is a beautiuful green kitchen on this site somewhere I think the name was "Bulkey". You might be able to do the same in grey. If you cannot find it I think I have filed a photo of it. I think it may be a Candice Olsen design. I am wanting a sunnnier color for mine - I tend to love the yellows and am even considering an apricot/paler mango color. Now sure how this would work with the green dining room - but I cannot stop thinking about it. I will keep you posted on my colors as they change. Does anyone have a kitchen that is apricot or mango?

Here is a link to google, how that backsplash should have been installed. There are some u tube videos too. I watched one video, where they used grout, between the countertop and the backsplash, and grout should not be used there. Caulking shud be done between backsplash and countertop. My backsplash is also caulked in all the corners, rather than grouted. Once you watch these videos and read these articles, you will see that your thinset was put on improperly, and thats why your tiles are falling off.
