Color-body vs through-body porcelain with a routered edge?
Comments (6)The contractor-routered edges can work beautifully with natural stone tiles. Second-best would be through-body porcelains, but spend some time in a tile store first so you won't be surprised by what you get. A through-body porcelain has a body ceramic that's close to the surface color. CLOSE - not always exact, because sometimes they put on a glaze or surface treatment that changes the appearance. If you router off the edge, the rounded section you see won't be an exact match for the top. Most often, you'll see a similarly-colored subtly-dotted base. Some people are perfectly happy with this look. Some aren't. (I'm in the NOT group.) Even the ceramics and porcelains that come with 'matching trim pieces' can have this same issue though. Sometimes the surface design or glaze just disappears! They call this matching? I don't! Sometimes they continue the glaze all the way around the edge. THAT matches. If I want a finished edge, I have learned to closely inspect the trim pieces. I will NOT buy them sight unseen, even if it holds up a job. They're just too important to getting a great look....See MoreWill I hate tile floor? + other tile questions...
Comments (99)Rhome - I didn't spot this thread earlier, but will add my two cents. I'm a few years older (58) and also live in the PNW. We have tile floors in the bathrooms (heated) and tile at the front entry and mud room that is unheated. I'm thankful every day that we don't have unheated tile floors in the kitchen. Too hard and too cold. And it's the kind of cold that goes through a thick pair of socks unless they are wool. I tend not to wear shoes in the house, and those tile floors are a chilling surprise every time I stand on them for more than 15 seconds. We did pre-finished hardwood which is a bit more forgiving in a lot of ways. This is a beach house and we have a large dog who refuses to let anyone (including the vet techs) near her with nail clippers, plus wet and sand. We have oak that's kind of a busy grain in sort of a honey color. It hides just enough, and I don't sweat the patina it will get over the years. When it gets bad, we'll have it refinished....See MorePlease put me out of my misery, vote for hardware and/or tile
Comments (36)I love your countertops and the arrangements in your kitchen! While I do like Pull B, I think Pull A goes better with your room, especially with the lovely upper knobs. Re the tile behind the range -- I'd only be concerned that grout is awfully hard to clean from the inevitable grease. But since that's what you like, I 'd have to say many of the patterns you show us look really good. I do like a splash of color, but you may have plans for that with the minor appointments in the room....See MoreI want to install all porcelain tiles inside my home, where do i start
Comments (5)I would get myself over to Yelp, and research local flooring stores that sell product AND do installation. Read through all the reviews. Get a comfort level that you can work with the folks in the store, and that they stand behind their products and work. Even more important when you're doing the whole house--it's a big project! When things go wrong, and you can read through many, many threads about that, the manufacturer points at the installation, and the installer points at the manufacturer. It is an uphill battle, it can get $$$legal$$$, and when I put flooring in our whole downstairs, I was (rarely for me) less concerned about saving $1/sf than I was concerned about not having anything go wrong, and in the event something did go wrong, having a long-standing store with LEVERAGE over the manufacturer to reduce my risk. I'm glad I went the way I did, and after all my questions, I went with the decades-old family-run store with the great reputation across town. They made great recommendations, and made sure to offer me all my options/upgrades up front, and didn't try to talk me out of anything that was important to me: (e.g. I asked for no quarter round to have a sleeker look of baseboard meeting flooring). Be sure to ask about additional costs for moving furniture, and which crew they will send. In my case, they sent their "best" crew (most experienced), and I agreed to wait for them. They picture-framed our hearth (mitered corners-looks great), and "beefed-up" a stair step that leads to our front door, making it wider/safer--at no extra charge. There are things that a homeowner might not know about (cheap glue?), moisture issues if you're on a slab, etc. These are just my thoughts and experience. You can also read through a lot of threads in this flooring forum to see what goes wrong for folks, and get a better idea of what questions to ask. Good luck!...See MoreMelissa R
