A mix of modern style and classic furnishings that honor this 100-year-old home’s heritage is on display at the 2017 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, which opens Sunday, April 23, and runs through May 21. The decorated rooms are not intended to create a unified interior but instead independently showcase each designer’s style.
Designers were influenced by the California home’s architectural style and history, at times mixing high tech with high design. Whether it was with wireless sound systems in the bedrooms or all-natural furnishings in the garden cottage, this year’s showcase designers added up-to-date touches while staying true to the home’s legacy. The 7,479-square-foot mansion has been a filming location numerous times over the years. Most recently, the garden party scene in the hit movie La La Land featured the loggia, below.

The ceiling was treated with a golden-bronze patina with metallic pigment that glows in the evening and reflects the light of the chandelier. “You don’t notice it much during the day, and then all of a sudden, it comes to life around 4 o’clock,” Williams says.

Foyer, Staircase and Upstairs Gallery
Design team: L’Esperance Design
The beauty of the home’s original carved woodwork is accentuated in the entrance foyer, which is furnished with a mix of vintage and modern elements. Digitally produced coverings for the walls and ceilings create a contemporary trompe-l’oeil. Artist Shari Tipich hand-painted tree scenery onto panels between the original wainscoting panels to reflect the trees outside. Texture and dimension are evident along the stairway to the upstairs gallery, with its wall of eclectic art.

Powder Room
Design team: Alicia Friedmann Interior Design
The glamorous powder room is hidden under the home’s main stairwell, and designer Alicia Friedmann says it was intended to be like a “jewel box.” Her goal was to make the space “glamorous and classic” yet “unexpected and like an art installation.” Antique glass tiles on one wall blend with floral and striped wallpaper on the other walls and ceiling.
Sink and fixtures: Snyder Diamond; wall tile: Ann Sacks; cement floor tile: Clé Tile; lighting: Zia-Priven; wallpaper: Kravet (ceiling) and Osborne & Little (walls)

Dining Room and Conservatory
Design team: Reaume Construction & Design
Nature meets contemporary design in the dining room and neighboring conservatory — the latter was once an outdoor garden. Birch tree-like wallcovering brings nature to the dining room. Black and white, along with muted grays, silvers and golds, dominate. A special paint blend was used by a faux artist to create the iridescent silver wainscoting.
Tip: For an easy alternative to installing floor tile, the design team used a clever stencil appliqué on the dining room floor, which can be removed.
Dining table and chairs: Jean-Louis Deniot collection, Baker Furniture; place settings: Michael Aram; rug: Aga John Oriental Rugs; Venetian glass chandelier: Susanne Hollis; wallcovering: Enchanted Woods in Moon Glow, Phillip Jeffries; sculpture: “The Buddhist Thinker,” Gabriel Rivera; paint: Dunn-Edwards Modern Masters

The nature theme and black-and-white palette spread into the conservatory, with French encaustic floor tile and spun silver nest lanterns.
The conservatory’s luxe lounge chairs are meant for relaxing “while enjoying a cocktail before or after dinner,” says designer Michele Stone.

The kitchen includes modern touches such as the latest Asko, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, including a microwave that pulls out of the cabinetry. Porcelain slab countertops have the look of marble without the maintenance. “We did a mix of materials to make it look like it was decorated over time,” says Vonk, who oversaw the work.
Luxe features include alabaster pendant lights, copper fixtures and a custom antiqued brass range hood. Porcelain flooring that mimics limestone anchors the space.

Laundry Room and Bathroom
Design team: Dana Triano Designs
Designer Dana Triano transformed this tiny space next to the kitchen into a multipurpose “family command station” with a warm blue palette, custom shelving, a folding counter and a hanging area for laundry. “Once I stacked the washer and dryer, it really opened up the possibilities,” she says.

A deep utility sink with jets is convenient for everything from potting plants to hand-washing delicates or the dog. Next to that, a narrow closet uses the tight space to store an ironing board and, on the other side, a broom, dustpan and mop.

The cement tile floor and custom blue mirror give the adjacent bathroom “some depth and perspective,” Triano says. Inspired by the home’s Tudor architecture, Triano used the powerfully patterned floor tile, black panels and cardboard “bricks” (near the ceiling, not shown) to give definition to the room’s white walls.

Tip: For the look of a tin ceiling without the expense, Triano used plastic foam panels painted antique pewter from Decorative Ceiling Tiles. The upper windows above the desk overlooking the backyard have stick-on strips that mimic leaded glass. “I thought it would pull in the Tudor character from the exterior of the house, and it let the light shine through,” she says.

Teen Suite (bedroom, sunroom, bathroom)
Design team: The Art of Room Design
“Rock Glam” is the theme of the suite of rooms intended for a teenager “with a passion for rock ’n’ roll,” say the designers. The monochromatic palette is accentuated with punches of color in the bedroom’s artwork, including three-dimensional roses, in honor of the home’s location in Pasadena, also known as the Rose City. Black slate and glass tile dress up the original fireplace surround.
Furniture (bedroom and sunroom): Bassman-Blaine, Urban Colony, Pin Dynasty Furniture and Custom Comfort Mattress Co.; aluminum rose sculpture: Kalish Editions

Charcoal-colored grasscloth on the walls contrasts with white ceiling molding, while a bit of glitter glams up the faux-finished ceiling. The ogee pattern is repeated throughout the space, from the duvet to the vintage rug and beyond.
Rugs (bedroom and sunroom): Deco Rugs; wallcovering: Bijou Coverings

The sunroom is the “rock” portion of the suite’s theme, with teen-friendly eclectic furnishings and accessories in the sunny octagon-shaped space.
The bathroom has a timeless feel, mixing brushed brass fixtures and an antiqued brass shower bar with handmade tiles in two patterns — offset hourglass on the main wall, and two-tone diamond pattern in back of the tub.

Media Room
Design team: Casa|Wasy
More smart-home automation is featured in the media room, with a system that controls lighting, window treatments and audiovisual elements. Glare from the windows was an issue, says designer Susan Sawasy, so the problem was resolved with the automated system that drops the window shades and dims the room’s lighting when the TV goes on. When it’s time to read on the comfortable seating, perhaps with a glass of wine or tea from the adjacent bar area, the lights will brighten and the window shade will roll up. “Colors were kept dark and intimate, with the intention of making the space cozy but to also make the room feel larger,” Sawasy says.

Comfort reigns in the deep blue sitting room, which designer Goli Karimi calls the suite’s “inner sanctum.” A Sonos speaker system is concealed in the wall opposite swivel lounge chairs and a vintage Art Deco bar cart, “so it looks like a flat wall, but there are speakers in it,” says designer Stephen Pallrand. A smartphone or tablet controls the sound.

A small brick tea cottage in a coast live oak woodland was transformed into “Bee’s Bliss” by Justina and Trevor Freel, who are launching their art and design company at the showcase event. Their Earth-conscious design, Trevor says, “honors ancient craftsmanship and natural materials,” which are on display in the honeybee-themed space that encompasses a California native garden and patio area.

Inside, the couple designed contemporary Shaker-style furniture, including this hanging daybed. Craftsman Paul Huberty of Shaker Fine Furniture in Pennsylvania used traditional joinery to create the pieces. All the textiles were organically farmed and produced. The bee skep chandelier material was hand-woven in Lithuania with wheat and willow, and the Freels combined it with a corded socket light with gold-dipped bulb from Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.

Justina created a 6-foot-square art piece using hand-cut paper pressed with textiles. A hexagonal marble tile with a 24-carat gold glass bee from Mission Tile West serves as the top of a brass table created by the Freels.
The main house inspired the Tudor design of the honeybee hive, which the Freels designed and Huberty built.

I agree with cheryld1. When there are multiple designers, as in many showcase homes, it results in incongruous design elements that would not happen if there was one designer. Many rooms have great features when viewed independently, but the entirety of the home appears disconnected and sometimes over-decorated. And the home could be so much more!
I toured this house last week and am struck by the differences in tone what I saw and your pictures. In general, the colors are much more muted than in your photos. I don't know whether the change came from the lighting your photographer used or the photo editing, but I much prefer the real thing.
I recognize the exterior from SO many movies! I want to say Beaches and Mr. Mom (three-legged race on the lawn? Or a sack race?) Something with Tom Skerrit?
