Thrift store find
Comments (12)Thank you Sherri. The marigolds are volunteers from the small bed I planted up against our sunroom 5 years ago when we first moved in. I have not planted a marigold since...just keep moving one or two to someplace else and they just self seed. They are my perennial annuals! :) Kath...See MoreThrift store find: Dutch oven, needs TLC...
Comments (19)Good find! I agree with Lindac on the oven cleaner, plastic bag, set it outside in the sun. Do this over a day or two until you are able to get down to the bare metal which will be a slightly lighter gray color when you remove all the crusties and rust. I strongly advise you not to use vegetable oil. Crisco or other vegetable shortening or lard is better IMHO. Bake long, low and slow - about 325 for an hour or more. Let cool, wipe out any excess grease with a paper towel and repeat the process as many times as needed to seal the pores of the iron. Yes, the pot will become dark black, smooth, and somewhat shiny after the process. Teresa ~ in one of the MANY camps on the care and feeding of old cast iron! Comments (6)Hmmm...I could write up a HUGE list, I love my area thrift store. The best deals for this summer though... Pottery Barn decor for $1 each that I found in the catalog from the winter for no less than $50 each. A set of LeCrueset cookware still in the box for $25. A box of what the seller called junk...that ended up having an almost complete set of antique french flatware, several great ironstone pieces (my first ones - yay!), and more great antique and vintage kitchen wares than one could possibly hope for - for the bargain price of $5. OMG...I almost felt bad when I got home and researched what I bought. But I had to remind myself - one man's trash is another man's treasure...and this was a treasure for sure in my world....See MoreThrift store find; What's it for?
Comments (5)The overall shape resembles the tagine pots, but the bottom is much deeper, and there are holes in the bottom. That didn't appear to be characteristic of the tagine pots in my Google search. Garlic keeper looks like a good bet, though the location of the ventilation holes is unlike any I found online, and it's huge compared to many. Thank you both for joining in the speculation. I grow garlic every year, so for the meantime, it will have a place of honor in the kitchen, full of my own harvest! Mary...See MoreAnglophilia
