New Constr. Design Challenge: Vent Hood or Above Range Micro?
Comments (23)As someone who currently has an OTR and *IS* 5+ years down the road from when we put it in with small kids that didn't use it at the time, I can say that it WILL become an issue when they're older. My son is now 10 and he does use it and it's a huge pain in the rear. Not only is he perfectly capable of using it but he has to lift anything WAY up and over the stove to put it in and then reach UP to push the buttons. I'm always nervous he'll spill whatever he's heating and then I'll have a huge mess on the stove. And if I'm cooking on the stove, he's not allowed to use it at all, which makes him feel "little". My six year old has no issues yet. But if the microwave was lower, I guarantee, she'd be perfectly able to heat some things by herself now, which would be very convenient for me! LOL! The door gets in the way if one of us is cooking and the other needs to access it. The venting is nonexistent. I hate hate hate that we can still smell a hearty meal in the house the next day. I'd NEVER put one in another kitchen unless I absolutely had to. IMO, your kitchen has plenty of room to have the microwave elsewhere, so that's my vote. In our build, we're putting a microwave drawer in our island. It's more convenient for everyone and out of the main view as well....See MoreIs the Vent-A-Hood Ductless ARS range hood worth the $$$ ?
Comments (4)I would not use a low end vent with light, personally. In a relatively small place like a NY apartment, I would probably go for the most effective option. However, these seem to be in the $900-1400 range with the typical 30" at the low end of this. How often do you have to replace that pleated filter? I did see a NY apartment that used a ducted hood and had the duct run into the bathroom where it came out right next to the ventilation duct in the bathroom which pulled some of the cooking smells out since these have some "chimney" effect. I don't know how much the bathroom smelled like food because they ate out a lot like many Manhattanites....See MoreVenting the Range hood in new build?
Comments (3)I need a vent that seriously sucks. In a good way. Thanks for the smile. :) And I agree about asking Kaseki in the appliance forum....See MoreVent hood suggestions that work with existing appliances and new range
Comments (3)I think it will look like you just bought the deal of the week for each appliance and honestly I would never do anything but plain old stainless for my appliances and if a star range was my plan then for sure all stainless and a colored range with stainless handles. IMO kitchens have a lot going on in them and too many finishes just looks a mess . Whites from one maker to another never match and even the white from a maker this year might be very different when you need a replacement that is why IMO all stainless is still the best way to go . Since you already have stainless handles on the other appliances IMO go stainless for the range . As for the hood I never like wood hoods they get dingy looking and hard to clean and over time discolor a nice simple stainless hood with the proper CFM and MUA will always be a the choice IMO. You do not have a huge kitchen so even more reason to keep things simple BTW the plan you posted is impossible to read the measurements so hard to get a feel for the plan. A fridge in a corner is never good design Ato scale floor plan of the new space is what you need to post here if you really want some help. BTW enammeled cast iron sinks went out of favor for a reason the first time you drop something heavy and chip it is the time you will wish you chose something else . When you post the floor plan show all windows doorways where those doorways lead all measurenments clearly marked and the sizes of the appliances,...See Moreprovidencesparrow
