Entry/dining wall divider

We have a partial height glass block wall that creates division from the front entry to where the dining table is. The glass block is great because it allows light from the front skylight to keep the space bright. The real estate consultant and interior designer both recommend replacing the glass block wall....but I can't seem to find any ideas. This glass block wall is attached to the adjacent wall for stability

I think I would like it better if it lined up with the height of the doorways or was taller and framed somehow, But if you took it out you could do something like louvered panels or Shoji or some other wooden grid. Look at Pinecrest, Inc. shutters.

You also have glass block at the front door, so the use seems to be consistent for your home, which looks to be maybe an '80s contemporary. So, it doesn't necessarily seem out of place. Perhaps take a look at other similar homes (if you're in a development) and see what they have done. But as far as options go, I think you're restricted to either removing it entirely, keeping it, or replacing it with a solid partial wall. What did the interior designer recommend?

How about some elegant black iron scroll work? There are scads of varieties and they are often the perfect solution for a wall that needs that certain "something". (The photos are from my home.) I recommend choosing art that a) reflects your interests and b) makes you happy every time you see it. You said you can't your hang travel visas and martinis, but why not? You could frame your travel visas and arrange them under a large matte. For the martinis, you could either buy a painting or print of them or literally frame some martini classes in a shadow box. You might also consider vintage travel posters from places you love or that you've already been to. Your home is very nice!

Make a simple line drawing of the before and after layout, and the walls you want to remove, since this will make it much easier to understand your description. You can set off an entry area by using different flooring, such as tile, slate, stone, etc. Then make the transition to the dining room flooring (wood?) and it will be obvious that the person is entering a different "room". You also need to evaluate those walls to determine how much you can really remove. It looks like there are soffits for HVAC, bulkheads for lighting, and wiring in the walls. They may also be load bearing walls, which means installing manufactured beams that are large enough to support the load across that span. Bruce

Mini-this is concept and I tried to estimate dimensions but those need to be verified of course. I took the tufted sofa and turned it and moved it into living room space. I took your lucite entry table and used it as a sofa table behind the tufted sofa. This allows a spot for a lamp for needed additional layer of lighting. Then I put the antique settee with it’s back to lucite sofa table. I swapped the two coffee tables and this helps harmonize the look of modern and traditional. Plus the sizing looks like it would work better too. The two accent chairs create rest of seating area. The long wall would get the art gallery wall or a new large piece of art. I also added a large shade floor lamp to this area to create interest and sone height in the grouping. I put a green plant, possibly a Fiddle Fig in right corner for some greenery. Once we settle on furniture locations, then we can tackle art, lamps, rugs and accessories. A zebra rug under the lucite coffee table would draw the eye to this grouping and create interest with irregular shape. And inject some fun. You could use another floor lamp in area to left of window on the main living room. This would add height and ambient lighting at night. Thoughts?

I think the first thing one will see is the accent wall and art. We are all accustomed to seeing TV's on a wall and the eye really no longer registers them as significant enough to distract. I agree, I think a nice rug in the entry hall will provide a warm and welcoming feel. That should be enough to create the foyer as its own space. Leave the dining room rug, but colors pulled from it and in a different style. I'm liking the blue color scheme. It's hard to tell on my monitor if the background on your rug is white or greige. These are examples but you will need to tape out the correct size on your floor before buying one. I just edited this post for clarity.

I actually like it and it would not be a deterrence to me buying your house. I think leaving it open would be too open to the entry and a solid wall would destroy that open, light filled space.

The only other thought I had would be some kind of shoji screen treatment if it would work in your home. Not necessarily a traditional Asian style, but something using rice paper type materials that would allow the light to flow:

I agree with Jakabedy. It goes with the style of your home. That said, I also agree with Pal. It needs to be higher. The height is what is throwing off the over all look of the wall.

What would be the problem of just removing it and having it be an open concept?

Even though glass block is no longer in fashion, I like, both in general and in your house in particular. A friend of mine has a 1960s condo with a glass block wall, and I think it is very cool.

What would be the problem of just removing it and having it be an open concept?

Nothing, really but I do like that it separates the dining room from the entry. The table is kinda close to, and in a straight line with the front door, and I would not want to sit with my back to the front door at the head of the table, in particular.

Thanks everyone ...hard to know what to do.. The glass wall does match the glass block of the front door. Have had two realtors suggest replacing with some type of space division to keep privacy when at table and blocking cold air when door is opened.

I would think that anyone looking at a contemporary style home would not be turned off by a contemporary element. I think that it looks very nice in your home.

I like it! I have many such homes around me and taking out one part of the overall style will change nothing. If someone finds the glass block offensive they will not like the overall style of your home anyway. I would look for other ways to appeal to buyers...like paint colors or spiffing up the kitchen and baths if needed.

ETA: what's funny is that anytime now we will see, read or hear about the fabulous catch on a house that still has the original glass block. it will be coveted.
