Help me Furnish & Decorate My Living Area &Dining Room of my new home
Comments (26)I love the clean, uncluttered look of your home and you've made some great furniture choices. My first thought, though, is that I would try to rework the sofa/sectional placement. It really is unwelcoming looking to me to have the back where it is facing a wall, when it could be oriented to look into the room and out the windows. It seems like if it were placed in the corner under the stairs that it would feel open and invite you to come in and sit. I'd hate to be cooking in the kitchen and have the family or guests with their backs to me. If you are having a TV in another room close by, do you need one in that room, too? If, so placing a 70" unit will probably only work as you have it. But, to me, it's not going to look like a living room but more like a movie theater, which is fine if that's what you're going for. It seems like it won't be a cozy conversation area, though. I might actually flip the rooms and put the dining room where you have the sofa now. I was looking at lights used with dining rooms and ghost chairs and saw this, maybe would work in the living room? Kind of fun. don't know if it would look as good without the colored walls though. And I thought something like these were interesting to consider for over your table:...See MoreNeed Decor Advice for New Home Living/Dining Room
Comments (5)I would suggest a much larger and more colorful rug for the sitting area. Your TV setup looks awkward and unattractive. Can it be changed somehow? I would paint the brick wall in the dining room the same color as the other walls to open up the whole space. I would remove that large mirror and put a smaller painting there and also remove the tall bookcase(?) near the couch which adds nothing to the decor. The mantle should be cleared and some much larger items placed there. I don't know how you feel about painting the fireplace the same color as the wall, but that would also make the room look more cohesive and spacious. I'm afraid the ceiling lamp by the front door looks too small and droopy to have any impact. You need something much larger that has a greater presence. Another thing to consider is white blinds instead of brown ones on each side of the fireplace. Again this will open up the room. I would remove that small table to the right of the TV with the little lamp and put a great-looking floor lamp there. Is there some way you can do without the bulky ottoman? I think that's one reason that area looks so crowded. I would think about replacing it with a small but sturdy glass and metal coffee table through which you can see the rug, giving the illusion that there is almost nothing there. Hope I haven't overloaded you with too many ideas. It's your home and you can do whatever seems right to you. If you follow even a few suggestions you might find that some of your concerns are removed....See Moreliving room/dining room decor ideas?
Comments (3)Before adding art to the walls you might want to finish getting your furniture. It seems that you especially need tables/lamps. Overhead fixtures are the worst for creating harshness and making everything and everyone look bad. Are you adding chairs? Have you considered a more colorful rug? Once these things have been determined it is time to think of art, You should not just go out and buy stuff for the walls, Take it slowly and wait till you see things that you love or have meaning. The decor can be things other than " pictures". It can be plates, baskets, funky objects, wreaths, etc....See MoreHelp decorating recently renovated living/dining room?
Comments (37)Hi folks, First, thanks to everyone who commented upthread. I’ve read it all and appreciate the time/input. I’ve been quiet because I needed to chew on it- and do some shopping/reflecting/budgeting. Wanted to share a progress update. Open to additional input. Haven’t found furniture I want to purchase, so I’ll work with this for now. Haven’t found big plush *washable* rug I love, so got simple $100 5x7’ rug at Target (needed a cozy play space with cats). My big TV + stand had a dramatic crash/accident and broke; using smaller TV from upstairs on coffee table until I figure out best replacement. PENDING: Dining room Photo gallery wall w/ 11x14 frames (my own photos from Africa). Either vertical up the narrow angled wall near TV, or to right of kitchen entrance. I think :) Hang some African baskets to right of art New table runner Lower chandelier eventually. (Raised when installing due to pesky cat, but he’s no longer interested.) Living room simple corner end table decor. (Vase was inherited. Good color, but seems random.) General Adjust art height. I suck at that! Dining room used old nail hole for now. Window coverings TBD. Planters for 2 faux plants TBD. Figure out if I want to use the red African sunset photo. Love it, but doesn’t seem to work. EDIT: This is another blue vase I have onhand. I could put something simple like a bit of Eucalyptus or something (faux because…cats…)...See Morepricklypearcactus
