I would suggest you redirect your effort and money toward using a top rated security (antivirus) system. If you're using one and getting viruses, what you're using isn't working. You can't use more than one at a time and each shown in the ratings when used by itself should help you avoid problems. The ratings are from a respected and very trusted source, PC Mag. The top rated choices are shown as EC, Editors' Choice.

The last factor to be mindful of for your internet safety is your own conduct. Don't go to sites you don't know, don't click on links you don't know, don't download unnecessary material. The better security programs will advise you whether a link or a download is safe before you proceed with it.

Many internet service providers (ISPs) offer well regarded security programs to customers for no charge. Check with yours, maybe you have one available to download and use.

I believe you will need to contact Malwarebytes technical support to find out why you can't log in.

We use Webroot SecureAnywhere through Best Buy. Not expensive at all, I think $59 per year for two computers and 1 mobile device. It has Realtime Antivirus, anti malware, and web shield plus a firewall. No cooties (infections) in the two years since we started using it and no issues with the software. It seems to have a light footprint on computer performance as well.

Contact malwarebytes. It is an excellent program.

Walnutcreek...I have Malwarebytes Prime and I agree wholeheartedly with Raven. Most active and involved internet users will attest to the fact that it is the best...or one of the best...anti-malware, virus protection programs available. Plus it's now officially recognized by MS as a virus protection program. isc.sans.edu uses it and recommends it highly.

There was a minor glitch with the previous version before this latest version 3.1.2 that created a minor loading issue with Win 7 but it's been fixed and it didn't reduce its protection. It didn't involve viruses.

Currently, there are no issues with the program. It just ran a full scheduled scan on my system so I speak from current experience. Try rebooting and going to their website again. If you still can't get in...go here:

Neil Rubenking, a respected PC security expert who's been active for over thirty years, is the person who honchos the PC Mag ongoing reviews and reports in this area. He rates the Malwarebytes Premium program as only Good, lower than the top rated programs included in the articles linked in my earlier comment. His review mentions certain Poor test results for Malwarebytes (compared to results of other products) and suggests that while the company says the program is suitable as a standalone security solution, he doesn't agree.

PC Magazine, of late, has delicately stayed away from rating Malwarebytes Prime and, for that matter, any paid version of Malwarebytes programs. I don't find that a criticism of Malwarebytes. More an editorial caution on PC's part that should be taken into consideration by its readers.

Personally...I believe one gets what one pays for...and, another adage, if you will...the proof is in the pudding. Malwarebytes 3.1.2 is at the top of the anti-malware, anti-virus lists of those willing to pay for their protection. I'm a willing subscriber and have been for years while they grew, finally earning MS's approval. Not that I needed the MS stamp but considering that they've never willingly provided it...I find it most pleasing that they now have welcomed Malwarebytes into their protection listings.

Six to one, half dozen to another, but I'm another on board for it. My husband has worked in the field for years at a local hospital and they swear by Malwarebytes as well.

I too use malwayrebytes and have been in the computer/software industry for decades. It is NOT a standalone program. You must have a good antivirus and you may have to pay for it. Along with PC magazine, I recommend www.cnet.com as a good source.

When was the last time you heard "Yes, I've been using X product for many years now and it's awful". Right, never.

Subjective, anecdotal opinions are just that. I have them too, but I think they're N/A in cases when something has been assessed by experts

The effectiveness of security products is easily stress tested using real and live malware to recreate a user's experience. Detect and identify, clear, block, remove, easily observed steps. That makes objective comparisons valid. The reason why I supplied the ratings is for that reason - Rubenking does his own testing and also uses independent testing labs to assess relative performance and capabilities of these products. He presents test findings and ratings dispassionately.

Everyone has their favorites for most things but that doesn't compare to objective and impartial assessments of measurable and testable performance done by experts.

Some years ago, with kids not always using the best judgement for their PC use, our home PCs would be struck with malware needing removal from time to time. I used Malwarebytes and found it to be a good product. When I shifted my own habits to using a premium security program (it happened to be Norton but there are others too), my need for Malwarebytes went away because Norton was that effective. This is my opinion and nothing more. The ranking of antivirus programs in the linked articles is objective and of greater validity to me because it comes from objective testing. To say "this is the best because I use it" doesn't hold water with me.

Please check the latest version, Elizabeth. Malwarebytes Prime v.3.1.2.1773 now scans for viruses. That's why MS has finally accepted them as a Virus Protection program. My Action Center under Security now reads "Malwarebytes reports that it is up to date and virus scanning is on." It's full service now. They've, also, recently added AdwCleaner as a PUP removal tool to their family. If one has the latest and greatest Malwarebytes Prime version...there's no need for any additional protection.

Beyond that...I agree that cnet is excellent but there's nothing wrong with filehippo either. They're both reliable sites.

I have looked at Malwarebytes Prime 3 and have considered it. I do like the A/V I have now though, so I prefer MB for an occassional scan. There are many ways of doing this. Ya' gotta do your homework.

Filehippo is a download site, CNET is a magazine that offers downloads (be careful not to click in the wrong place) and does articles but no testing. Both are reliable but are not in the same category as PCMag.

Yes, Elizabeth...I agree about doing ones homework and for all the years I've been on the internet, I've done mine. Malwarebytes isn't the only utility I've used over the years. I started with Norton in the good old days and over the years...I've used AVG and Avast, Bitdefender and Symantec...all at their then prime...and all paid versions. I've even paired them with Malwarebytes when I felt it necessary. But overall, Malwarebytes has been my continuing choice for protection. I'm delighted that they continue to advance in that world to the point where I don't need to pair them with another utility these days.

Just as everyone has their favorite...Malwarebytes has been mine and I'll stay with/defend them as long as they continue to perform at their current level. If the day comes that they "slip"...as Norton did some years ago...then I'll start investigating new programs.

This has been an interesting discussion and, as always, I come away with a little more knowledge than I had the day before. I think the greatest security device in the world is insufficient if the user doesn't exercise cyber caution and stay informed. I think we can all agree that's one of the best protective "tools".

The programs that I have used in the past were Norton, Avast, and McAfee. IMO they were all horrible. Caused my computer to be extremely slow, as well as other issues. When I found Malwarebytes, I was very happy with it. Used the free for personal use version for several years. Then when I started being hit with ransomware, decided it was time to start paying for a program I knew was good. Have not regretted it.

What I ended up doing was disconnecting the power from my computer, home network router, and cable internet router for most of the day. I was away from home so did not need the computer. Upon restarting internet router, then home network router, then computer, my problems ended. Malwarebytes ran a scan (3.1.2 version and all is good. I love Malwarebytes.

The problem now is that I keep getting a warning from "Microsoft Technologies" that I have threats that need to be repaired. How in the .... do I get rid of that?

I can only speak for Norton because I've been using it for nearly 10 years. It has a very light touch, same as PKPonder describes for the highly rated Webroot product she uses. I think the better programs have changed from how they acted years ago. In the case of Norton, scans and updates are done automatically but only when the PC is idle. The scan will be stopped if use begins. Otherwise, you wouldn't know it's there. I'm sure the other excellent products act in a similar way.

I won't recommend Norton for the reason I described above. It happens it is highly rated by experts but so too are several other programs. Make your own choice from among them, I'm sure you'll be satisfied.

I use MB Premium along with Webroot since it's free from my bank.

I never receive a warning from either, which means I'm not taking risks.

I run Windows 10. Started beta testing it when it first came out for testing. Have grown with it and love it. Don't care for Edge though. And, I have made my choice and am very happy with it and have no plans to change from Malwarebytes Premium; most certainly never to Norton. No one in my world of family and friends uses Nortion because they hate it.

It's a top rated and recommended program and widely used in large organizations with sophisticated IT ops, so be careful what you say because your comment says less about Norton and more about your sample than you might have intended.

We use Symantec End Point Protection at work with a McAfee firewall for websites that may be of poor reputation. Wednesday when the SEP scans run, it does slow us down, but otherwise, it is a lot different than the old 'Norton' or Symantec as far as performance goes.

As I understand it, the two products are similar and with some common parts insofar as capabilities and technology are concerned but End Point Protection allows easy and centralized administration of installations througout an enterprise's PC fleet that's often physically dispersed.

I don't know Elmer, that would be above my pay grade :-) I just support the end users and listen to them complain about their slow computers every Wednesday. SEP seems to be quite effective and only rarely does our Internet Security Group need to remove infected computers from the domain. We are the nuke and pave team, we format and reinstall Windows as directed by security :-)

Our user base has to work pretty hard to defeat the protocols and become infected and that speaks well of Symantec (Norton) IMO.
