Hi Karyn, I read this stuff from a local newspaper, here is the recipe (I quote as it was): "Take a quarter kilo of whole, unpeeled garlic and separate one liter of water, bring to the boil, simmer for about 15 minutes, remove from the stove and leave to stand for approximately 12 hours. Then strain it through fine muslin cloth and spray on pests. The same garlic can be re-boiled two or three times before losing its potency. Proportionally increase the amount of garlic and water for larger batches. This spray is completely safe for both indoor and outdoor use and should be applied 2-3 times a week until the problem is resolved. This spray washes off in wet weather so donÂt use it during periods of extreme humidity." It worked best for me when applied in morning and just before evening i.e. twice daily. Happy Gardening. Good to hear Mike! Makes sense, neem can burn up leaves. I've noticed the leaves on my maxillaria turn brown if they get too much sun. Is yours getting a lot of sun lately? I don't water it too much because it's in pure peat moss and it retains a lot of water. I notice the bulbs shrivel if I don't water enough so that's how I gauge its water needs. But with orchids the more water the better. Some of my orchids seem to need double the water and fertilizer of the others. What medium is your maxillaria planted in? And maybe some leaves just tend to turn brown naturally. Some of my orchids will get ugly spots, probably from sunburn or humidity, on the leaves while others are virtually spotless. Maybe fungicide and less sun and no water resting on the leaves can prevent spotting and browning. I don't really know!

Central Florida has plenty of native plants with decorative features you could grow instead (I've been to the Orlando area and seen some of them myself). And as during my trips to Hawaii I found the native plants more interesting than the exotic ones - when a body travels to various places there is a tendency for the same garden favorites to be seen repeatedly within shared climate zones. Whereas local floras vary regionally, may often include intriguing plants that have little or no presence in large scale commercial horticulture.
