Planting some flower and veggie seeds today... Q. & Advice Needed
Comments (5)I planted zinnia, broccoli and onions seeds outside using the styrafoam cooler with a piece of plexiglass on top. I knew that once they germinate that I can't leave the top on but wasn't sure what I needed to do before that happens. Because I had that fear that they needed warmer temps, I've only planted a few so far. I'm going to plant some more but keep them inside for now. I didn't want to have to go through the trouble of taking them in/out later to get them use to the temps outside (stratification I think it is called?)...See MoreKindergarten-to wait or not to wait?need to know this week!
Comments (25)Agreed. This isn't the time to debate the benefits and cultural mores of extended nursing. The OP was very specific. And I also agree that the function of kindergarten has changed. My cousin's daughter was expected to know how to read and write her own name, address, and several other things before entering kindergarten. Many districts are opting for full day kindergarten, teaching basic math skills, and implementing pretty advanced curriculum. When I was in kindergarten (I'm 28) it was about not running with scissors, waiting in line, and practicing tracing letters. Not only have the academics changed, but, in the course of that change, the amount of time spent on socio/emotional development has been shortened. If she's not at the same level of emotional development and social skills as other 4 - 5 year olds, then it may be appropriate to hold her back, send her to preschool, and work on those skills for a year. I had a Nov. birthday, and was one of the older people in my class. I can't remember that age -- either way -- was a big deal, except maybe when we were starting to drive. By high school, though, some kids will have been held back, so even if you start her late she won't be the oldest by much out of her original class, and there will likely be older kids who are repeating a grade. I really wouldn't let being the oldest/youngest be a determining factor. I also wouldn't let her start and then pull her out. In the long run, that's going to be more detrimental than helpful. It seems like delaying kindergarten is fairly common and accepted for boys. I'm wondering if some of the reaction is a little different because this is a girl?...See MoreCan I plant spuds today, wait for Monday rain?
Comments (10)Consensus on what? Watering? You are assuming there is only 1 right way and all other ways are wrong? Nope. If some body in GA doesn't want to water his, fine. If some body in MN want to, that's fine too. It isn't brain surgery. If you want to water them, do so. If you don't want to, don't and see if it rains. If it doesn't rain in the next few days then you can water them. It really doesn't make any difference one way or another. There is no such thing as consensus in gardening - far too many variables. Comments (15)"Come down, Bill! We have sugar!"... actually think it was Kevin McCarthy... from original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. On back: went to see doctor this morning. After saying I REALLY needed to see a doctor, was asked if I hurt back at work. When I said... maybe, not sure, I don't know?!?... almost a chorus from other side of counter that I'd have to go to a workman's comp doctor. I'm NOT much of a doctor person to begin with but number one concern was STOP THE PAIN... then figure out what the problem is. Had a talk with some sort of non-doctor (PR person) , Explained original injury is 20 some years old, re-injured about 2 years ago, and possibly job connected, I don't know. Explained I wasn't leaving without getting some help and she agreed we had NOT had the conversation, iykwim. Getting an xray and bone density scan on Friday. Doctor said wouldn't be surprised if it was a compression and/or related arthritis... AGE related!! At least doctor wasn't a "kid". Got prescription for Tramadol?? Doctor said not a major, heavy-duty pain med. Coulda fooled me from the literature that came with it! Said dosage was kind of an as needed thing... from 1/2 pill to no more than 2 every 8 hours. Has been about hour and half since taking first dose, so just waiting to see how it goes....See Morerifis (zone 6b-7a NJ)
