First rough kitchen plan
Comments (29)Yes chicasgoans that area outside the garage access door is a closet and a shoerack/bench. I just put that in quickly but that will likely turn into a mudroom with a door to the backyard as I imagine that will be the most travelled path to the yard for the kids. Like you said, I was focused on the kitchen :) If there's one thing everyone seems to agree on it's that we need a mudroom! Regarding the peninsula, it's a tough choice. We played around with different island configurations and with the whole living area being so open, it just didn't seem like the kitchen had it's own defined space. Does that make sense? We toyed with putting the fridge closer to the garage door area as some suggested but I like where it is, it's literally in the center of the house and easily accessible from all directions. Having it by the garage door also requires an island configuration. My main concern is losing the window in the kitchen, I don't know that it's worth it? I'm definitely aware of the walking around the peninsula issue with regards to fridge access, setting the table, etc.. but I also really like the idea of having such a long continuous counter. It's hard to know what to sacrfice because it's becoming clear that you can't have it all :) For some reason the photo I uploaded in the previous post isn't working so here it is again, this is with the pantry shelves on the other side of the door in the laundry room instead of in the kitchen. And here is kind of the idea we'd be going for i guess, though not with such a deep counter :)...See MoreFloating cabinets
Comments (18)Sorry Joe but I don't agree with you. With no reinforcement, the weight of the cabinet and its contents would eventually torque and sag. Or just imagine what would happen if someone leaned or sat on the cabinet. All the site built vanities in my house were floating and built like tanks but still had the little box beneath the cabinet at the back for them to sit on....See MoreFloating shelf vanity + drop-in sink?
Comments (9)I just measured the depth of our current (circa 1980) sink. It is 5" at the deepest point but the overflow hole is 1 ½" from the top making it effectively 3 ½" deep. It is a bit hard to explain. The capacity of the sink isn't the problem it is the height of the sink wall above splashes that is the problem. Or maybe the less steep curve...I don't know. Here is the sink we have (not sure if Krauss still makes this one) Every time I wash my hands I have to clean the wood and I am constantly getting water everywhere when I use it. Just my personal experience....See MorePlumbing appearance/regulation question regarding sink drain and a/c
Comments (30)@kudzu9 Yeah we passed! We have other corrections to make before the final occupancy (mostly silly little ones like I have to change the light bulbs), and we need a few more gfi outlets (1 in laundry, 1 for range/hood, one more in bathroom) but they are mostly just little things. The plumbing and fixtures passed in the bathroom. Actually he gave us a compliment on the plumbing. He said that most people don't use a UL listed bottle trap and that's why they don't pass (I think he said UL listed, but it may have been another acronym; I didn't want to press him about it by asking questions). So maybe that's the secret? I do have to add a gfi plug next to the toilet though. Here are updated pictures. I just need to paint the chome piece and plastic tubing so it matches the rest. I wanted to wait to see if it passed....See Moregeoffrey_b
