Farm House Breakfasts

Most mornings I have one egg, over easy and one slice of toast, buttered. Elery says I'm boring, he'll have an omelette made out of last night's spaghetti or leftover taco filling, whatever he can find.

This "boring" breakfast, though, even made my more adventurous husband happy. I roasted some new beans I got from Burman's, they got their obligatory 24 hours of off-gassing and became a very nice cup of coffee.

My ladies are busy this time of year, and so I have fresh eggs. I'm getting between 16 and 18 a day, in all shades of dark brown, light brown, blue, green, it's a rainbow of colors in the egg carton.....

I baked a loaf of no-knead bread for toast. With the soft middle and the chewy crust, it makes nearly perfect toast. Buttered of course.

Add some home smoked bacon:

Plus a little bit of sweet in the form of baked oatmeal bars with raspberry jam, and breakfast becomes a little more "special".

Even though we're retired, weekends still seem to be when we have a breakfast that's out of the ordinary. I guess old habits die hard.
