My house for sale: Can anything fix my curb appeal?
Comments (21)Any suggestions about door paint colors, given the existing other colors? I think a black door can look super elegant in many cases, but maybe wouldn't work as well with my shutters which are dark brown. Interesting about not installing new plants when a house is on market. My thought was that filling in a blank space (within reason) might look better. My market is probably first time home buyers. Younger people who aren't yet gardeners may not see the value/ potential of a blank slate. Indoors, my realtor and a friend have said my minimalist furnishings are cold looking and need some strategic items to make rooms more inviting. Considering that, I was thinking a couple bigger plants would make the outdoors -- by magic! -- more inviting. I take your points about the addition of permanent plants not being 100 percent called for in home selling. I'm probably dreaming outside of my budget anyway. To answer publickman, storm doors insulate the primary door against winter cold air/ summer hot air, and protect the primary door from driving rain. Maybe storm doors were first developed for entrances that don't have a porch or other roof. Also many storm doors have screens for summer use. Thanks again everyone....See MoreCurb Appeal A-Frame Lake House
Comments (5)I'd vote for changing to sliding glass doors rather than the more traditional door and window there now. You're never going to get the traditional look with this house anyway, so might as well go all the way with modern. Plus, I'd think you'd really enjoy the better view of the water. I'd also probably keep both decks, though I think a more modern design would look better than the present "rustic" look. Either metal, or perhaps painted wood. I'd also double check code on that upper deck - looks dangerous with those wide gaps that a child could fall through. As far as amount of deck - don't build more than you'll use. Wraparound decks that take up more square footage than the house itself I think look a little ridiculous. Just figure what size you need to fully enjoy it and leave it at that. Looks like a fun getaway place - wish I could see the lake!...See More1900 folk victorian needs curb appeal help
Comments (19)I would plant some shrubs in the beds in the retaining wall. Aronia lowscape mound, some mountain or sheep laurel, Azaleas. Itea little henry. Dwarf Fothergilla. Obviously, you need ro paint the wall and fence. The fence looks to be in bad shape, which suggests it may need replacing. I'd consider replacing with a hedge, if you want to demarcate the end of the flat part of the lawn. Aronia hedger, inkberry, bayberry, blueberry are some options. Itea. Of course, I have a lot of shade and maybe suggesting plants that need more shade than you have. Check. I'd also reconmmend painting your trim --- or at least the window frames and door blue. Navy is a crisp look. A softer blue would give you some definition, but be easier to paint over if you later want a house with colored siding and white trim. Paint the bare wood white and the railings in your trim color....See Moreside-of-house front door, need curb appeal ideas
Comments (10)Your visitors need to be guided to your front door. Take out the overgrown shrubs and, as has been suggested here, re think the sidewalk to your front door. This can be done by widening both the bed in front of your house AND installing a wide sidewalk (modern paving stones) to the right side of your home. With planting beds on the street side of the pathway. You might consider low level lighting, too, to guide your guests to the right door. As has been suggested…placing your house numbers in a more obvious place, making them larger, and lighting them will help people see where they should enter. Have you ever considered creating a gate across the front of your carport? One that could be opened (or even have a small gate for family access) so that people see that area as “private?” Just a thought. Note: Installing a sidewalk to the street in front of your home, as some have suggested, only works IF your neighborhood has sidewalks. Many neighborhoods do not have them....See Morerustynail
