Solid Hickory vs Red Oak hardwood floors
Comments (5)Houses14 = I too thought about using Hickory as I like a lot of variation in color and was interested in having floors with character... What changed my mind was when we cleared the trees to build our house we had a truck load of saw logs and I couldn't bear to see them go to waste. I thought the least I could do for imposing on them was to give them a place in my home. I had a mill cut them into rough boards then finished them out at a local kiln. They were planed, cut, and milled. I had them cut to yield, which gave me 3" - 4" and 5" planks. I asked them to leave in the knots and sawmarks. The first picture is a close up of the floor boards and the second is a picture of the room. These are site finished natural with a touch of brown in them to make the knots pop... The floors just had the final coat put on them and look even better than these pictures... We are very happy with our red oak... I'm sure whatever you choose will be great... Good luck. Comments (15)floorguy and glennsfc what would you use. We need l000 square feet of hardwood. Our island will be in a dark stained rift quarter sawn oak. The hardwood will go in the kitchen, eating area, living room (great room for those three rooms), den and one bedroom. We would like to use oak on the floor to match the island, but have it stained in a medium brown color. In the past two hardwood finished on site floors we used glitza water based finish. I don't know if glitza is still allowed because of the ureaformaldyhydes (sp??) but would like a satin finish. Maybe we shouldn't be so close minded about unfinished. Maybe we should buy finished but we have to get longer lengths then are usually offered. In VAncouver, B.C. all we see is 4 to 5' at the longest. Just looks like a quilt. And for a l000 square feet of mostly open area that could be deadly. My mind is open and I look forward to your opinions. I know you know a lot more then I do. Can hardly wait to hear your opinions....See MorePlease recommend Light/Medium pre-finished solid hardwood floors
Comments (17)That wood work in your home is to die for! Honestly, often part of the charm of older homes is the "evolution" of different types of hardwoods over time - are you completely opposed to sanding the existing hardwoods down and refinishing in the same stain? The ones in your pictures look to be in great shape and definitely fit the feel and age of your home. Could save you a lot of money and headache and end up looking great - just a thought. Whatever you do, please avoid putting in wide plank engineered wood floors (that are everywhere right now) - vintage hardwoods are incredible elements in older homes. Newer wood floors can zap the charm right out of an older home IMO....See MoreWhite Oak or Hickory solid floors, Pre-finished or site finished?
Comments (6)The Hartco/Armstrong/Robbins/Bruce lines have lost alot of respect over the last 25 years. The company has changed hands several times since. I lost track of what they are called today. Many dealers have their displays gathering dust in a warehouse. Forget about the dogs. They'll do damage on any hardwood floor. A character grade Hickory would work best for those that may have high expectations after being influenced by a young inexperienced sales person. Keep in mind, floors are made to walk on. They are the most abused interior building element of the home. They're made to walk on and not prized like a fine piece of furniture. Perhaps others can fill in the site finished aspect....See Morelinnertime
