James Galway Rose Questions...

If you are in zone 5 (central Indiana), what is your experience with James Galway? I have a sunny space 20' long by 7" wide where I would like to have a few tall bushes surrounded by a line of boxwoods.... Heirloom roses describes it as "large shrub with long, slightly arching, almost thorn-less growth" I don't mind the thorns but I am looking for something tall, I can provide some support if needed... Thoughts?

I've grown it in upper east Tennessee zone 6b and it does that here. If you don't get an answer from Central Indiana, you might contact Palatine in Canada . They have offered it for several years and their location in Ontario is a bit colder than you so their success (or failure) would be useful for you to know.

I just saw this today at Peter Schneider's open house near Ravenna, Oh 5b max. It was phenomenal and huge with beautiful flowers and yes, thorns, but I'm now thinking of finding space for it in my Cincinnati Z6 garden, I was so impressed. He doesn't not winter protect. I took a super lousy pic which I'll post when I return home if you like.

buford - that was kind of my plan with JG. I had just arranged the canes around the obelisk and tied them to it. But the canes are really hard to get to bend and the more I did, the less I thought that this would work. Good luck with your Teasing Georgia. I still want to pillar a rose, just not sure JG is the one to do it with. :( I may have to cut him down quite a bit jut to get him free from the obelisk I have him tied (mostly) to now. I thought perhaps as the canes got bigger, they might bend more, but the truth was just the opposite (of course(!), now that I think about it). That's why I have some canes hanging over people's heads (well, it hangs over my head and hits DH on the head!). DH is very anxious that I do something with this rose! haha

Wow!!! I can’t believe a climber that big stayed happy and thriving in a 5 gallon pot. That‘s one AMAZING rose. I actually have to do the exact opposite with my White eden Climber. We need to renovate and it MUST be moved. I don’t have a perfect spot for it yet... so I’m trying to figure out how to move it from its spot where its been growing happily for 8 years... into a pot. If you all have any words or wisdom or advice... please send it my way.

I have loved this rose since I first saw a group of about 6 or 7 young plants of it grown together in a nursery. What I like best about it is that its flat form and curly petals are so distinctive. Also the "old rose" color shadings and its fragrance that, while not powerful, does not disappoint in any way. I have not noticed any disease. I am growing mine on an arch in a north-facing exposure. It is fabulous in spring, with fall bloom that is increasing but not copious. I think if I grew it in more sun and with more fertilizer it might be more floriferous in the off season. I had no idea when I purchased it that it could reach 6' wide, and I do think its main fault here in zone 6b -7a is its tendency to get very big. I still haven't figured out how to prune it. Maybe its growth would be more restrained further north.

Gorgeous, as always, bayarea_girl! So are you saying that Bathsheba is a much superior rose? I'm not really looking for a new rose - it would mean that I would have to remove something else. Your photos of Bathsheba show a rose with beautiful form, and are more pink than the DA photos. Those DA photos are much more orange than I want in my garden. If James Galway is going away, and it's a fabulous rose, I may remove an Eden and put it there. And if Windermere is a "must have" rose, I could see removing something for it. Maybe Dee-lish which is a nice rose, but a much more strident color than I'd prefer, or Abe, which is a lovely rose...at times, but opens an eye popping orange which always makes me unhappy, and he has turned out not to be the happily growing bush that I thought he'd be but rather scrappy looking despite my best efforts at pampering. Or Sonia Rykiel, whose bush was a fright last year.

I have James G. here in Michigan. Own root, and I don't winter protect it, spray it or feed it...The canes are hardy here -- usually 2-3' of cane survives the winter, and by August it is easily 4' tall. Very healthy foliage, large pink flowers packed with petals. Steady rebloomer. Not fragrant. Good for garden color.
